Dann ist er impotent. Ist er fähig, aber nicht willens? Dann ist er boshaft. Ist er sowohl fähig als auch willens? Dann lässt sich fragen, woher dann das Böse kommt? (S. 99) Physisches Leid im Gegensatz zum moralischen Leid entsteht aus der Natur und hat nichts mit dem freien Willen zu tun. So kann zum Beispiel bei Naturkatastrophen und Krankheiten die Lösung nicht beim freien Willen gefunden werden. Nicht die Menschen tragen die Schuld allen Leidens. Die Theodizee ist die Rechtfertigung Gottes hinsichtlich der Übel in der Welt. Wenn es einen vollkommenen Gott gibt, wie kann es dann eine unvollkommene Welt geben, wo so viel Elend besteht? Gott könnte ohne Probleme alles Leid beseitigen. Dazu müsste er nur wollen. Und wenn er gütig ist, würde er es auch wollen. Somit wäre Gott faktisch auch für das Leiden auf der Welt verantwortlich. Wo liegt somit das Problem? Will er nicht, kann er nicht oder ist es ihm gleichgültig? David Hume hat seine Sicht zur Theodizee in seinem Werk "Dialoge über die natürliche Religion" in den Kapiteln zehn und elf dargelegt. Wilhelm Leibniz legte dies in seinem Werk "Die Theodizee" dar. In diesem Essay vergleiche ich die beiden Positionen und lege dar, weshalb mir welche sinnvoller erscheint. Ausserdem will ich widerlegen, dass, wie Hume behauptet, Leibniz das Elend dieser Welt leugne.
