Es mag aus den zufalligen und beil�.ufigen W'and lungen eines mehr �u�eren Geschmacks zu erkl�ren sein, da� Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, ein Gro�er unsrer gro�en Zeit, solange nur im Namen bei uns nachlebte, und da� wir erst heute uns wieder f�hig fuhlen, den Menschen und sein Werk zu kennen und zu ehren. Das Jahrhundert, das an der einfachen Klarheit Goethes ge bildet war, f�hlte sich von der Besonderheit seines Stiles abgesto�en, die wir heute genie�en, von dem Wechsel leerer Weitschweifigkeit und. J�her Belebung, von der pl�tzlichen Sch�nheit, die sich in eigenen aus der Erregung des inneren Aufschwungs geborenen Formen erhebt. Unter der Vielfarbigkeit und Sprunghaftigkeit eines solchen Stiles dem bewegenden geistigen Willen nachzuforschen, ist schwer und konnte als wichtig und wertvoll erst in einer Zeit erkannt werden, deren Geisteslage von sich aus zu dem Streben dieses Dichters als zu Verwandtem fiihrt. Man begn�gte sich f�r lange nach �berkommenen Meinungen von J. P. Zu urteilen und hielt sich an Einzelheiten, die in ihrerlosl�sung den Sinn der Gesamtleistung verdeckten. Dass man jetzt mit allen Mitteln der Forschung daran arbeitet, ihn, der seinen Zeitgenossen so deutlich war, aus seiner Verdunkelung zu befreien, ist nicht zuerst auf das historische Bed�rfnis zur�ckzuf�hren. Wir danken ihm neben Wahrheiten, deren Lebendigkeit wir nen empfinden, neben dem Ernst und der Gr�ndlichkeit seines Denkens, when seiner kunstl0rischen bei. - dung das Beispiel seines l'ersmliehseins. Es w�re zweckhm, hier nochmals hervor anheben, was das in unserer Zeit der Zersplitterung, Spezialisierung und Lostrennung innerlich zusammen h�ngender Lebensgebiete besagen will. Dazu wird uns heute zu h�ufig und von zu vielen Seiten das Verlangen nach nach Erfassung "und Gestaltung des Lebens von einem kraftvollen und scln�pforisehen Zentrum aus kundgetan. Es gew�hrt nun bei J. I'. Ein eigentiim liches Bild, wie die Tatsache des eigenen persanlieh geistigen Seins in seiner Gedankemvelt sich malt und dert in festen Zgcn darzustellen sucht, was sie an Wert und \vichtig keit bei sich vorfand. Allerdings mu�te sie ihre Farben auf den zum Teil sehr spr�den Untergrund einer philo sophischen W eltanschanung auftragen, die von der Zeit lage gegeben und wenig geeignet war, den Personlichkeits gedanken in v�llig reiner Kontur hcraustreten zu lassen.
