Ich möchte hier einen Augenblick innehalten, um mich gegen den Vorwurf zu verwahren, als sei das, was ich in der Vorrede zu Dendrobium gesagt habe und diese letzte Ausfuhrung hier als eine Polemik aufzufassen, gegen den Größesten, dem die jetzige Zeit für die Forscherarbeit eines ganzen langen Lebens verpflichtet ist und es bleibt, so lange man Naturwissenschaften treiben wird. Als Ch. Darwins Werk über die Einrichtungen, durch welche Orchideen befruchtet werden, erschien, glaubte man die Formel zu haben, welche die schwierigsten Gleichungen mühelos löste und endlich den Gesichtswinkel, unter dem die unendliche Formfülle der Orchideenblüten angesehen werden müsse. Wenn irgend einer, so habe ich damals das Buch mit Begeisterung gelesen und ehrlich und tiefgründig war diese Begeisterung. Wer dann, wie ich, im portierte Orchideen zu Zehntausenden hat liegen sehen, wie sie in den Speichern der großen englischen Importfirmen lagerten genau so, wie sie aus den Wäldern gekommen waren; dazu tausende von Herbarexemplaren untersucht und an diesen allen höchst selten Exemplare mit Kapseln gefunden hat, der muss gegen die Verallgemeinerung der in dem Darwin'schen Buche niedergelegten Satze misstrauisch werden. Mag dem nun sein, wie immer, mögen wir ein ungeheures Sterben unter den Insekten an nehmen müssen, uns die Pflanzen, wie wir sie jetzt haben, anmuten, wie eine ver schollene Sprache, zu der wir keinen Schlüssel haben, so bleibt das eine als unsterb liches Verdienst Darwins übrig, dass er uns die Orchidaceen anders anschauen und anders beschreiben gelehrt hat. Dies Verdienst wird auch dann bleiben, wenn es nie gelingen sollte, den Gegensatz zu überbrücken, welcher zwischen der grenzenlosen Frucht barkeit der Orchideen unter der Hand des züchtenden Menschen und der fast völligen Sterilität ganzer großer Abteilungen in der Natur unzweifelhaft besteht. Beobachtungen über die Befruchtung von Eric fehlen zur Zeit noch gänzlich. Die einzige Frucht, welche wir in der Litteratur erwähnt finden, ist die von Beer in seinen beiträgen zur Morpho logie auf Taf. V, Fig. 13 dargestellte übrigens wenig charakteristische Kapsel von Eric stellata. Es ist eine spindelförmige, an der Stielseite stärker verschmälerte Kapsel von etwas ungleicher Entwicklung und an der Spitze von den Überresten des Perigons ge krönt. Die Struktur der Samen ist nicht erläutert und keiner abgebildet. In Ch. Dar win's mehrfach erwähntem Werk ist von Erin. Überhaupt nicht die Rede. Es hat dies wohl seinen Grund darin, dass diese Gattung in der Kultur stets eine ganz unter geordnete Rolle gespielt hat, da die Gärtner wenig Freude an den im allgemeinen nicht schönen Gewächsen haben, und an Amateuren, welche auch derartige Pflanzen züchten, augenblicklich nicht 10 existieren.
