Die biblische Urgeschichte Gen 1,1-11,9 wird religionsgeschichtlich und erzahlerisch untersucht. Sie wird im Ganzen als Mythos im Sinne einer Urzeiterzahlung angesehen. Die biblische Urgeschichte will vom Ursprung her die Existenz des Menschen und der Welt in ihrer Widerspruchlichkeit erklaren und bejahen. Dabei geht es um die widersprechenden Grundbedingungen, die die gegenwartige Existenz des Menschen in der Welt bestimmen. Die biblische Urgeschichte verliert als Mythos nicht ganz diesen unmittelbaren Gegenwartsbezug, obgleich dieser gerade wegen der sie kennzeichnenden Geschichtsbezogenheit abgeschwacht wird. In der "jahwistischen" Urgeschichte wird der Mensch zwar als Wesen mit Moglichkeit zur Sunde dargestellt. Aber sie beschreibt weder den Menschen einfach als "Sunder" noch seine Geschichte als die der "Sunde." Fur sie handelt es sich eher um den Gewohnungsprozess Gottes zu seinem menschlichen Geschopf. Der kommt am Ende der Flutgeschichte zum Klimax. Die positiven, von Gott geschenkten wie die negativen, von Gott verhangten Elemente gehoren mit zu den Grundbedingungen des menschlichen Daseins. Diese Ambivalenz des menschlichen Daseins wird auch durch die Beziehung des Menschen und der Erde bzw. dem Ackerboden ausgedruckt, wobei die Aufmerksamkeit besonders auf die Zusammengehorigkeit von Mensch und Erde erregt wird. Dieser Punkt wurde bisher noch nicht genugend beachtet. Der Mensch wird wegen der zu bebauenden Erde erschaffen und bekommt durch die zeitlich begrenzte Existenz der Erde eine gewisse Daseinsgarantie; Gott wird um der Erde willen den Menschen mit seinem Hang zur Bosheit, wie er ist, akzeptieren. Die priesterschriftliche Urgeschichte stellt die Gottesebenbildlichkeit des Menschen in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Darstellung. Diese wird in Gen 1,26 funktional, d.h. in Bezug auf einen Daseinsauftrag verstanden. Dagegen wird der Nachdruck in 5,3 mehr auf die Familienahnlichkeit von Vater und Sohn gelegt, was bisher ubersehen wurde. So kann sie das Verhaltnis von Gott und Mensch eher als das von Vater und Sohn beschreiben. Anders als in beiden biblischen Urgeschichten wird die Erschaffung des Menschen in den altorientalischen Parallelen wie z.B. dem Atramhasis -Mythos dadurch veranlasst, die Gotter von der notwendigen Arbeit an der harten Naturgegebenheit und dem dadurch bedingten Konflikt zwischen ihnen zu befreien. Insofern hat sie eine kosmische Funktion, namlich die durch die Gotter reprasentierte Weltordnung zu stabilisieren. Die Funktion des Menschen, die die biblische Schopfungserzahlung dem Menschen zuschreibt, ist eher eine innerweltlich ordnende Funktion.
