About the Book

English summary: This new interpretation of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War addresses the question of the historian's attitude towards sea power or "thalassocracy." Accentuating the narrative structure of the text and taking into account its connections with the history and intellectual trends of its time, it can be shown that Thucydides was not the fervent admirer of sea power and maritime imperialism he is often supposed to be; nor was he a strong opponent of maritime power, denouncing it on the basis of political or social biases. Far from such extreme views his historical analysis of the Peloponnesian War emerges as an attempt at developing a radically realistic approach to naval power by contrasting its limitations in operation with the grandiloquent speeches about its supposed limitless potentials. This realism was a forceful response to contemporary, oversimplified views and even cliches regarding sea power which influenced the events of the war and whose analysis by Thucydides was to become a "possession for all time."
