About the Book

English summary: Today the Gospel of John still provides us with a host of puzzles waiting to be worked on and solved. One of the oldest Coptic versions of the John's Gospel was preserved in the Sahidic dialect of the Upper Egyptians. Here, for the very first time, Karlheinz Schussler has published the text of the Sahidic Gospel of John, a parchment manuscript first produced in the Jeremias Monastery of Saqqara around 600 AD. He points out that this early version holds various peculiarities compared to the Greek testimonies. As a consequence this Sahidic Gospel of John helps to reveal how the "Urtext", the original Gospel, might have looked. In addition to a detailed introduction including an analysis of the linguistic characteristics, the volume provides us with a photographic reproduction of the manuscript preserved in Dublin as well as a transcription of the Coptic text.
