Erstdruck: Gera, August Hennigs, 1797. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 16 pt. Henricus Edition Deutsche Klassik UG (haftungsbeschränkt) Über den Autor: 1763 als Sohn eines Pfarrers in Wunsiedel geboren, bricht Johann Paul Friedrich Richter das in Leipzig begonnene Theologiestudium ab und versucht sich unter kargen wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen als satirischer Dichter. 1790 ereilt ihn eine sogenannte Todesvision, deren emotionale Auswirkung ihn nachhaltig prägt. Aus Verehrung für Jean-Jacques Rousseau veröffentlicht er unter dem Pseudonym Jean Paul sein erstes größeres Werk: Die unsichtbare Loge. Dem Achtungserfolg folgt 1795 der endgültige Durchbruch mit dem Erziehungsroman Hesperus. Jean Paul schreibt in rascher Folge weitere große Romane, Siebenkäs, Titan, und schließlich seinen größten Erfolg, die Flegeljahre, die großen Anklang, vor allem beim weiblichen Publikum finden. Königin Luise lädt ihn nach Potsdam ein, er begegnet Fichte, Schleiermacher, Friedrich Schlegel, Tieck und Bernhardi und lebt auf Einladung von Goethe und Schiller zeitweise in Weimar. Er wird Ehrenmitglied des Frankfurter Museums, Mitglied der Berlinischen Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache, Ehrenmitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und die Universität Heidelberg verleiht ihm die Ehrendoktorwürde. 1825 stirbt Jean Paul fast völlig erblindet in Bayreuth.
