Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Motiv der Insel spielt in Daniel Defoes Roman Robinson Crusoe eine wichtige Rolle. Läßt man die Episoden, die Robinsons Jugend in England, seine ersten Seefahrten und das Leben als Plantagenbesitzer in Brasilien beschreiben und für den Hauptteil des Romans, den Inselaufenthalt eher eine einleitende Funktion haben, außer Acht, so ist die Insel der eigentliche Schauplatz der Handlung. Mit dem Begriff Insel können ganz unterschiedliche Assoziationen verbunden werden. Dies trifft umso mehr zu, wenn ein Mensch sich nicht aus freien Stücken für einen Aufenthalt auf einer Insel entscheidet, sondern gezwungenermaßen aus seinem gewohnten Lebensraum gerissen wird und in eine ihm fremde Zivilisation "verpflanzt" wird, so wie es bei Defoes Protagonisten der Fall ist. Robinson macht hinsichtlich der Bewertung des Insellebens eine Entwicklung durch. Die Insel ist erst Asyl bzw. Rettung vor dem Tod, dann Exil und schließlich unter dem Eindruck seiner religiösen Wandlung wieder Asyl. Dieses Wechselspiel von Empfindungen möchte ich genauer untersuchen, indem ich die Aspekte, die zu der einen oder der anderen Haltung gegenüber der Insel beitragen, analysiere. Das erste Kapitel wird sich mit dem Exilcharakter der Insel beschäftigen. Ich werde versuchen zu zeigen, daß soziale Isolation und Gefahren, denen sich Robinson auf der Insel (vermeintlich) ausgesetzt sieht, die Faktoren sind, die zu einer Bewertung der Insel als Ort der Gefangenschaft beitragen. Das zweite Kapitel wird dann verschiedene Aspekte untersuchen, die dazu führen, daß Robinson seine Lage doch positiv beurteilt. In Kapitel 3 möchte ich den direkten Kontext der Handlung verlassen und die literarisch-technische Funktion der Insel in Defoes R
