Im Jahr 1986 wurde durch Luftbildbefliegung am nordostlichen Rand des badischen Stadtchens Bruchsal ein Doppelgrabenwerk der Michelsberger Kultur (etwa 4300-3600 v. Chr.) entdeckt. Damit wusste man nun von vier dieser jungneolithischen Graben-Wall-Anlagen im Stadtgebiet, darunter das bereits seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhundert bekannte, eponyme Erdwerk auf dem Michaelsberg in Bruchsal-Untergrombach. In den darauffolgenden Jahren (1987-1993) konnten die noch auf etwa 550 m Lange erhaltenen doppelten Graben im Bruchsaler Gewann "Aue" annahernd vollstandig archaologisch untersucht werden. Uberraschend war die Auffindung von sechs Gruben am Rande und unter der Sohle des ausseren Grabens, in die die Korper von acht Kindern und sieben alteren Erwachsenen teils geordnet abgelegt, teils scheinbar achtlos hineingeworfen worden waren. Derartige Graber sind rar in der Michelsberger Kultur, findet man doch oft nur einzelne menschliche Knochen oder Schadel ohne weiteren Zusammenhang.In diesem Band werden die Grabenbefunde, 31 Siedlungsgruben und die sechs Grabgruben ausgewertet. Die detaillierte Ausgrabung und Dokumentation machte es moglich, die Baugeschichte der Doppelgraben mit ihren zahlreichen Toren und eines weiteren, erst am Ende der Ausgrabungen entdeckten Annexgrabens nachzuvollziehen. Die Analysen gaben Einblicke in die Konstruktionsabsichten der jungneolithischen Grabenerbauer, offenbarten Umbauten, die Entfernung von Durchgangen, die mehrfache erneute Verwendung und eine Erweiterung der Grabenanlage, zudem erbrachten sie Erkenntnisse uber Wiederverfullung, Abnutzung und Verfall der Graben. Die bereits publizierten Keramik- und Tierknocheninventare aus den unterschiedlichen Befundlagen konnten zur relativen und absoluten Datierung mehrerer Nutzungsphasen herangezogen werden. Die Anlage war demnach innerhalb von etwa 600 Jahren (ca. 4250-3650 v. Chr.) in Gebrauch, mit zahlreichen temporaren Unterbrechungen. Es wurde offensichtlich, dass das Erdwerk zu keiner Zeit in der heute erhaltenen Gestalt existierte, sondern das Ergebnis vielfaltiger anthropogener und naturlicher, uber sechs Jahrhunderte hinweg akkumulierter Umformungen ist.Die nach wie vor andauernde Diskussion um die Funktion der Erdwerke kann auch nach der Interpretation aller Befunde des Erdwerks von Bruchsal "Aue" nicht eindeutig in eine Richtung gelenkt werden. Hinweise auf eine profane Siedlungsnutzung mit Defensivcharakter sind ebenso vorhanden wie auf kultisch-rituelle Handlungen. Zudem deuten zahlreiche nicht lokale Fundstucke auf weit gespannte Tausch-und Kommunikationsverbindungen. Moglicherweise wurden die vier Michelsberger Anlagen in Bruchsal reihum wiederholt genutzt, und nach jeweils einigen Jahrzehnten Nutzungszeit zogen die jungneolithischen Bewohner aus unbekannten Grunden weiter zum nachsten Platz.
