Dies ist eine ganz und gar einzigartige Dokumentation! Man kann Walter Kempowski gar nicht genug danken fur die Sisyphosarbeit, von der das 1993 erstmals erschienene "kollektive Tagebuch" Zeugnis gibt: 15 Jahre hat er Biografien, Tagebucher, Briefe, Fotos, Akten und Notizen gesichtet, ausgewahlt und geordnet, um uns mit ihrer Hilfe einen ganz besonderen, originaren Einblick in ein außerordentliches Kapitel Zeit- und kollektive Seelengeschichte zu ermoglichen. Der Dokumentar enthalt sich jeden Kommentars und lasst die Texte der Beruhmten, Beruchtigten und der zahllosen Unbekannten fur sich selber sprechen. Allein die Zu- und Anordnung, von der aufwandigen Recherche einmal ganz abgesehen, ist eine Meisterleistung und macht aus dem archivarischen Konvolut große Literatur. Das Echolot fur die Monate Januar und Februar 1943, dem Kempowski mittlerweile mit Fuga Furiosa, 12.1.-14.2.45 und Barbarossa '41 weitere Bande hat folgen lassen, ist ein Werk, das den Leser unweigerlich mit in die Tiefe zieht. Funkspruche stehen hier neben Liebesbriefen, Frontberichte neben Eintragen in Terminkalender, literarische Arbeitsnotizen neben Klassenbucheintragen. Kempowski selbst hat einmal gesagt, wer sich mit dem Echolot zu befassen beginne, habe "kaum eine Chance zu entkommen". So ist es! In den montierten Stucken verliert man sich, hier und da erschrickt man, wundert und emport sich oder grubelt einem Gedanken nach -- jenem etwa, den Albert Camus unter dem Datum 10. Februar 1943 notiert hat: "Das ganze Problem des Absurden mußte sich auf eine Kritik des Werturteils und des Tatsachenurteils konzentrieren lassen." An manchen Stellen muss man sogar einmal lachen. Wenn etwa ein Zensor aus einem beanstandeten Brief zitiert: "Liebe Inge! Wenn Du wußtest, wie es mir geht, Dir stunde der Arsch voll Tranen." Meist jedoch uberwiegt ein Gefuhl der Besturzung: Besturzung daruber, was man den Autoren allesamt voraus hat: das Wissen um das Ende -- um die Hinrichtung etwa, die Sophie Scholl nur wenige Tage nach dem 17. Februar bevorsteht, als sie an ihre Freundin Lisa Remppis schreibt: "O, ich freue mich wieder so sehr auf den Fruhling." So verschlingt man Band um Band und taucht am Ende aus dem Meer fremder Erinnerungen mit einem anderen Blick auf die Vergangenheit und mit gescharften Sinnen fur die Gegenwart wieder auf. Als Walter Kempowski fur sein Gesamtwerk, insbesondere aber fur Das Echolot 1994 mit dem Literaturpreis der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung ausgezeichnet wurde, hat Gerd Langguth in seiner Ansprache gesagt, dies sei ein "auch im wortlichen Sinne großes Werk von ebenso zeitgeschichtlicher wie literarischer Bedeutung -- wohl einzigartig in der Literatur unseres Jahrhunderts".
