Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Noch im Barock durften, aufgrund der Ständeklausel, nur Personen des höheren Standes in der Tragödie auftreten, während den Menschen des bürgerlichen Standes die Komödie vorbehalten war. Die lächerlichen Bühnenhelden des französischen Komödiendichters Moliere, vom eingebildeten Kranken bis zu Tartuffe, waren Bürger, und die komische Figur der Volkskomödie war ein Bauer. Doch die Tragödie des 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhunderts zeigte im Mittelpunkt der Handlung stets eine Hauptfigur, die der Aristokratie angehörte. Tragische Schicksale - so scheint es - konnten nur Angehörige des ersten Standes erleben, während die Schicksale niederer Standespersonen, also der Bürger und Bauern, als unerheblich galten. Man glaubte den Bürger erhabener Gefühle nicht fähig; zudem fehlte ihm die soziale "Fallhöhe" (Schopenhauer), die angeblich die tragische Wirkung hervorbringt. Doch mit der Epoche der Aufklärung entstand Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts das bürgerliche Trauerspiel, das den Bürger in den Mittelpunkt des tragischen Geschehens rückte. "Der tragische Konflikt wurde [im bürgerlichen Trauerspiel] durch den Gegensatz der sozialen Schichten (Stände) ausgelöst." (Mettenleiter/Knöbl 1991, S. 291) Konflikt und Tragik resultierten entweder aus Standesgegensätzen zwischen Adel und Bürgertum (z.B. Lessings "Emilia Galotti", "Miß Sara Sampson"; Schillers "Kabale und Liebe), aus innerständischen Gegensätzen, die im Bürgertum selbst begründet waren (z.B. Hebbels "Maria Magdalena") oder "aus der Fragwürdigkeit und Brüchigkeit des Bürgertums selbst gegenüber dem entrechteten Arbeiterstand." (Winkler 1986, S. 99)
