About the Book

English summary: Franz Alto Bauer's book examines papal patronage from Gregory III (731 to 741) to Leo III (795 to 816), during the time in which Rome became the center of an independent papal state. This independence, the most decisive aspects of which are the increasing alienation from Byzantium, the alliance with the Franks, the changing role of the roman Saints and their relics, and the growth in pilgrimage, express themselves in new forms of architecture and imagery as well as in liturgical and ceremonial innovations. Similarly, the Liber Pontificalis evidences this change: as it becomes an instrument of papal historiography, it contributes to a better understanding of the various architectural and decorative donations in the city of Rome.
