Nulla v'ba di pm sacro nella storia di un Popolo, nulla che pm Io costringa ad unità fraterna, quanto la tradizione del Linguaggio, in cui apparisce specchiata l'indole, la vita, le credenze, i costumi, gli usi civili e quasi l'effigie del popolo stesso. Lietissimo vanto di famiglia è al certo di poter riconoscere ne' figli le fattezze degli avi, come eredità di gentile 'natura e non cessabile rinnovamento di un'immagine cara. Bensì da tacito gaudio son tocchi i nostri animi al riudirc da quelle labbra la lingua materna, destinata a far rivivere ne' dolci affettuosi suoni le generazioni che furono. Nè altrimenti a chi sente amore e dignità di Patria torna gradevole di ravvisare'ne'concittadini, non che i lineamenti, le sembianze degli Uomini grandi che per varia guisa valsero a crescerle potenza e splendore. Ma troppo meglio deve riu sciri di conforto nell'apprendere fra la sua gente intero di bontà e di bellezza l'antico Idioma, che pur si ammira trasmesso efficacemente nelle primitive Opere dell'ingegno e dell'arte insegnata dal cuore. Sedel pari che dell'umana progenie, a noi fosse dato di rinvenire e deter minar sicura l'origine e i processivi mutamenti d'ogni Nazione e d'ogni Lingua, risulterebbe ad evidenza che Nazione e Lingua non solo im portano il medesimo concetto, ma e si chela civiltà dell'una di vicenda in vicenda segue a riflettersi nell'altra. A dar fede di ciò basta la com battuta Italia, cui riserbavasi dai Cieli il beneficio di possedere tra i molti dialetti e pepoli un Popolo, il quale da lunga e diversa fortuna de' tempi e convivente anche in luoghi disgiunti da qualsiasi cultura intellettuale, mantiene tuttodi incorrotta la favella de' suoi padri, la favella de' primi e più sinceri autori di una nuova Letteratura, la fa vella del solenne Maestro della Civiltà moderna, Dante Allighieri. Ma raviglia (l'uomo, maraviglia di Popolo veracementel Giacché, se niuno ardirebbe negare a Dante la gloria della Lingua nostra, di cui egli diede in effetto a vedere la gran potenza, non vi sarà anco chi voglia con tendere al popolo Toscano il singolar pregio di avere custodita sino al presente, franca da ogni alterazione e corruzione, la Lingua che Dante ei raccomandò ne' suoi volumi, quale tesoro.dell'ltalica famiglia. Quella Lingua, quella Civiltà adunque, che dal sovrano Poeta prese vigoria e autorità educatrice di tutta la Nazione, quella stessa si continua inces sante presso questo Popolo, privilegiato di buon senso e signore della gentilezza. Ed ecco il grave subietto ch'io, senza altra guida e aiuto che di semplici fatti appresi alla scuola di Dante e d'illetterate persone, or m'affìdo di qui discorrere per libero amore del vero. Quindi almeno si parrà la soave mia riconoscenza verso di Voi, che indulgenti vi de gnaste di chiamarmi all'onore d'essere vostro collega. E vi ringrazio ben anco che m'abbiate offerto modo di riconfermare dinanzi a così ragguardevoli Uditori il devoto animo mio al nostro civile Maestro e a questo Popolo, ai quali deve la viva consolazione di sentirmi Italiano.
