Nous sommes dans les années 1850, dans un coin perdu, presque isolé, des Alpes autrichiennes. Le petit Peter, que tout le monde appelle Peterl ou petit Waldbauer, grandit dans la ferme familiale située sur les hauteurs des montagnes. Il est l'aîné d'une fratrie de huit enfants. Son père, travailleur et taciturne, d'une nature silencieuse et grave, le traite avec une douce sévérité et lui confie bon nombre de tâches dès son plus jeune âge. Sa mère, en revanche, n'a que de l'amour et appuie sa curiosité sans bornes et sa soif d'apprendre.

La vie du petit Peter se déroule comme dans un paradis enchanté et insouciant. La plupart du temps, il parcourt les immenses forêts de sapins, mélèzes et épicéas, gravit les alpages, foule l'herbe parfumée des prairies, garde les chèvres et les vaches. Mais il rencontre aussi des personnages très pittoresques tels que la pensionnaire Jula l'aveugle, le tailleur-plume Justus Alland, le braconnier Toni le Noir, dont le destin connaît une fin funeste, la colporteuse Thresel ou des bûcherons sans foi ni loi venus d'ailleurs. On s'amuse de ses histoires autour du vieux poêle de la maison, de son récit retraçant la tradition burlesque de la beuverie itinérante ou encore de ses exploits en tant que conteur attitré auprès de ses frères et soeurs. On frissonne avec le petit gamin qui se perd dans la forêt glaciale une nuit de Noël; on trépigne avec lui quand il attend impatiemment tantôt une serrure pour pouvoir enfermer ses trésors, tantôt un canif qu'on lui a promis; on essuie une larme quand il décrit la mort d'un aïeul ou le décès d'un voisin.

Waldheimat - Dans ma forêt natale est l'oeuvre autobiographique et magistrale de l'écrivain Peter Rosegger (1843-1918). Elle figure parmi les grands classiques de la littérature autrichienne, au même titre que les écrits de Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth, Robert Musil et tant d'autres, mais malheureusement, elle est tombée un peu dans l'oubli. Et surtout, elle n'a jamais été traduite en français, mis à part un petit recueil qui ne regroupe que 18 des plus de 120 récits.

Enfin, Waldheimat est rendu accessible au public français. Le texte a été intégralement traduit et annoté, faisant ainsi revivre un monde doublement disparu, à savoir celui de la petite paysannerie autrichienne du milieu du XIXe siècle d'un côté, celui de l'enfance innocente et heureuse de l'autre. Un chef d'oeuvre classique qui mêle candeur enfantine, douce nostalgie, humour et autodérision ainsi qu'une grande poésie et fait découvrir un paradis révolu, perdu, gardé vivant par la plume d'un grand écrivain.
