Dazu zählen industrieller Fortschritt, die Möglichkeit durch Druckerzeugnisse eine breite Masse von Lesern zu erreichen, wie auch die daraus resultierende Entstehung einer modernen Konsumkultur. Kennzeichen einer modernen Konsumkultur sind der Wunsch nach mehr Annehmlichkeiten und Produkten, die einen reinen Gebrauchscharakter übersteigen, sowie die Möglichkeit eines Individuums seine Identität über Konsum auszudrücken und zu definieren. Konsum als identitätsstiftendes Merkmal ist ein Aspekt, den sich beispielsweise die Werbung im 19. Jahrhundert zu Nutze machte, der sich aber auch in der Literatur dieser Zeit wiederfindet. Besonders die mit dem Fin de Siècle verbundene Figur des Dandys macht sich Konsum und den ästhetischen und nicht wirtschaftlichen Charakter von Gütern zu Nutze um seine Identität auszudrücken. Dabei handelt dieser in manchen Bereichen nach Prinzipien der modernen Konsumkultur, steht ihr aber in anderen auch kritisch gegenüber. Im Folgenden soll die ambivalente Beziehung des Dandys zum Konsum unter zu Hilfenahme einschlägiger Fachliteratur herausgearbeitet werden. Die Darstellung des Dandys wird deshalb auf seine für den Konsum relevanten Eigenschaften und Vorstellungen eingegrenzt. Dabei wird auf die Prinzipien des Ästhetizismus und des New Hedonism sowie auf das Streben des Dandys nach Exklusivität und Originalität eingegangen werden. Auf Grundlage dessen wird die Figur des Dorian Gray aus Oscar Wildes The Picture of Dorian Gray auf sein Konsumverhalten und den Umgang mit Gütern hin analysiert werden.
