About the Book

Op 6 oktober 1834, op 15-jarige leeftijd, vluchtte Anna Cora Ogden met James Mowatt (1805-1851), een prominente en rijke new yorkse advocaat. Ze verhuisden naar een landgoed in Flatbush, New York, waar haar man haar aanmoedigde om haar opleiding voort te zetten en te schrijven.Anna Cora Mowatt's eerste boek, Pelayo, of The Cavern of Covadonga, werd gepubliceerd in 1836, vervolgens Reviewers Beoordeeld in 1837 met behulp van het pseudoniem "Isabel". Ze schreef artikelen die werden gepubliceerd in Graham's Magazine en Godey's Lady's Book en andere tijdschriften. Ze schreef een toneelstuk met zes acts, Gulzara, dat werd gepubliceerd in New World. Onder het pseudoniem Henry C. Browning schreef ze een biografie over Goethe. Onder het pseudoniem "Helen Berkley" schreef ze twee romans: The Fortune Hunter en Evelyn. Evelyn is geschreven in de epistolaire stijl. In 1841, als gevolg van financiële problemen, Anna werd een publiekslezer. Op 13 juni 1845 maakte ze een nieuwe carrièrestap naar acteren, ze debuteerde in het Park Theatre als Pauline in The Lady of Lyons met groot succes. Hoewel haar volgende toneelstuk, Armand, the Child of the People werd gepubliceerd in 1847, en kreeg ook goede recensies, bleef ze in haar acteercarrière. Ze speelde hoofdrollen in Shakespeare (bijvoorbeeld in een productie van Cymbeline in Londen, 1843), melodrama's en haar eigen toneelstukken.
