Am 6. Oktober 1834, im Alter von 15 Jahren, ging Anna Cora Ogden mit James Mowatt (1805-1851), einem prominenten und wohlhabenden New Yorker Anwalt, zusammen. Sie zogen auf ein Anwesen in Flatbush, New York, wo ihr Mann sie ermutigte, ihre Ausbildung fortzusetzen und zu schreiben.Anna Cora Mowatts erstes Buch, Pelayo, oder Die Höhle von Covadonga, wurde 1836 veröffentlicht, dann Rezensenten im Jahre 1837 unter dem Pseudonym "Isabel". Sie schrieb Artikel, die in Graham es Magazine und Godey es Lady es Book und anderen Zeitschriften veröffentlicht wurden. Sie schrieb ein sechsaktiges Theaterstück, Gulzara, das in New World veröffentlicht wurde. Unter dem Pseudonym Henry C. Browning schrieb sie eine Biographie über Goethe. Unter dem Pseudonym "Helen Berkley" schrieb sie zwei Romane: The Fortune Hunter und Evelyn. Evelyn ist im epistolischen Stil geschrieben. 1841 wurde Anna aufgrund finanzieller Probleme eine öffentliche Leserin. Ihre erste Vorstellung wurde von Edgar Allan Poe besucht, der über sie schrieb: "Ein strahlend schönes Lächeln ist völlig unmöglich zu begreifen." Ihre Lesungen waren beliebt und gut besucht, aber ihre Karriere als Leserin war wegen Atemproblemen kurzlebig. Während sie sich von ihrer Krankheit erholte, kehrte sie zu ihrem Schreiben zurück.Gravur von Anna Cora Mowatt als Beatrice in Shakespeares viel Ado über nichts1845 erschien ihr bekanntestes Werk, das Stück Fashion[5]. März 1845 im Park Theatre in New York eröffnet. Am 13. Juni 1845 machte sie einen weiteren Karriereschritt in der Schauspielerei, sie debütierte am Park Theatre als Pauline in The Lady of Lyons mit großem Erfolg. Obwohl ihr nächstes Stück, Armand, the Child of the People, 1847 veröffentlicht wurde und auch gute Kritiken erhielt, setzte sie ihre Schauspielkarriere fort. Sie spielte Hauptrollen in Shakespeare (z.B. in einer Produktion von Cymbeline in London, 1843), Melodramen und ihren eigenen Stücken.
