Daisy Miller apareció en una revista en 1878 y en volumen en 1879. Fue uno de los raros cuentos de Henry James del que se puede decir que tuvo en seguida éxito popular. Desde luego en su obra, toda bajo el signo de la elusividad, de lo no dicho, de la esquivez, este cuento se nos aparece como uno de los más claros, con el personaje de una muchacha llena de vida, que explícitamente aspira a simbolizar el desprejuicio y la inocencia de la joven Norteamérica. Y sin embargo es un cuento no menos misterioso que los demás de este introvertido autor, un entretejido de temas que asoman, siempre entre luz y sombra, a lo largo de toda su obra. Como muchos de los cuentos y novelas de James, Daisy Miller se desarrolla en Europa y Europa es también aquí la piedra de toque con que se enfrenta Norteamérica. Una Norteamérica reducida a un espécimen sintético: la colonia de los cándidos turistas estadounidenses en Suiza y en Roma, ese mundo al que perteneció Henry James en los años de su juventud, de espaldas al suelo natal y antes de echar raíces en la británica patria ancestral. Lejos de la propia sociedad y de las razones prácticas que dictan las normas del comportamiento, inmersos en una Europa que representa una sugestión de cultura y nobleza y al mismo tiempo un mundo promiscuo y un poco contaminado del que hay que mantenerse a distancia, estos americanos de James son presa de una inseguridad que los lleva a duplicar el rigorismo puritano, la salvaguardia de las conveniencias. Winterbourne, el joven americano que estudia en Suiza, está predestinado -en opinión de su tía- a cometer errores porque hace demasiado tiempo que vive en Europa y ya no sabe distinguir a sus compatriotas bien de los que son de baja extracción. Pero esta inseguridad sobre la propia identidad social está en todos ellos -los exiliados voluntarios en los que James se espejea-, ya sean rigoristas (stiff) o emancipados. El rigorismo -americano y europeo- está representado por la tía de Winterbourne, que no por nada ha elegido residir en la calvinista Ginebra, y por Mistress Walker, que es un poco la contrafigura de la tía, caída en la blandura de la atmósfera romana. Los emancipados son la familia Miller, enviada a la deriva en una peregrinación europea impuesta como deber cultural inherente a su posición: una Norteamérica provinciana, tal vez de nuevos millonarios de origen plebeyo, ejemplificada en tres personajes: una madre medio evaporada, un muchachito petulante y una bella muchacha que armada solamente de su barbarie y de su espontaneidad vital, es la única que llega a realizarse como personalidad moral autónoma, a construirse una libertad aunque precaria.
