Es muy frecuente que cuando una persona decide ponerse a realizar un ejercicio físico o a practicar un deporte lo haga con más voluntad que conocimientos, no solamente en lo relativo al propio deporte que comienza, sino también en cuanto a lo que es correcto y no lo es desde el punto de vista de su salud.El primer concepto que está totalmente equivocado es confundir precisamente deporte con ejercicio físico, ya que mientras que el primero indica una actividad física en la cual ganar o al menos participar es la base principal, en la segunda cuestión solamente estamos tratando de mover adecuadamente nuestro cuerpo.Por eso, yo recomendaría a aquellas personas preocupadas por su salud o su estética que no practicaran un deporte en primer lugar y que se dedicaran solamente a mejorar su condición física mediante los ejercicios que elija, olvidándose de competir incluso consigo mismos, ya que la base de la preparación física es la mejora de la salud y nunca el ganar algo o a alguien.Una vez que la persona ha alcanzado un grado optimo de bienestar y fortaleza física, es el momento de elegir un deporte competitivo (todos lo son en esencia), profesional o de aficionados, o seguir dedicándose exclusivamente a mejorar su condición física poco a poco. En este aspecto es importante tener siempre bien presente tres cuestiones:1.La mejora física hay que lograrla lentamente.2.El deporte no siempre supone un bien para nuestra salud.3.Agotarse es casi siempre perjudicial.En el primer aspecto hay que señalar que el cuerpo necesita adaptarse a las nuevas exigencias corporales y para lograrlo hay que darle tiempo, del mismo modo que se necesita tiempo para aprender un idioma, un nuevo trabajo o, simplemente, para crecer. Pretender mejorar nuestra condición física en unas semanas es imposible y si cometemos el error de tratar de lograrlo a partir de ejercicios intensos solamente conseguiremos entrar en un declive peligroso, aunque aparentemente nos sintamos más fuertes.La siguiente cuestión puede parecer un contrasentido para una persona a la cual su médico le ha recomendado que realice deporte para mejorar su salud. Una vez más, confundir deporte con ejercicio físico suele llevar a más de uno a envejecer prematuramente o a enfermar. El deporte implica tratar de ganar y para lograrlo hay que exprimir y espolear al organismo incluso más de lo prudente, llegando a un punto en que para la persona que lo practica es más importante la victoria que el ejercicio en sí. Nada tengo en contra del deporte, siempre y cuando se elija por profesión o conscientemente de lo que se hace, pero no hay que confundir a la gente haciéndola creer que mediante la práctica de un deporte ganará salud, porque en muchas ocasiones no es cierto.Y la tercera cuestión también puede resultar chocante, incluso para los profesionales. Para la mayoría de las personas deporte y ejercicio físico implica cansancio y en ocasiones agotamiento, ya que se piensa que detrás de ello viene el progreso. Afirman que solamente se puede progresar si nos exigimos cada vez un poco más y conforme a esta idea no conciben acabar una clase de gimnasia sin sentirse agotados. Como veremos a lo largo de este libro, el agotamiento ni es imprescindible para progresar, ni mucho menos beneficioso. El ejercicio físico debe ser siempre placentero. Dejemos el torturar al cuerpo para quienes gustan de ello y no sigamos su ejemplo, del mismo modo que hay millones de personas que no encuentran placer en fumar, drogarse o beber alcohol.
