From the Author
The inspiration behind the character of Curly Hair Chose Me comes from my first daughter. She would sit and stare in the mirror, pulling on her hair, brushing it with excess amounts of moisturizer; all to get her hair to be straight and lay flat. She was comparing her hair to the straight hair of many of her friends; and as a biracial child, even the hair of some of her cousins. I saw this as a very important yet delicate moment. A moment to encourage, inspire and affirm her and her natural, beautiful features.
This moment highlighted the importance of representation. I sought books and shows where she could see and relate to characters that looked like her.
As a Black woman and mother to two biracial daughters, I understand the need for diverse representation. Knowing that children are more motivated to read when their own experiences are validated and they are able to resonate with the pages of a book. I wrote Curly Hair Chose Me in order to help fill the diverse representation gap in literary media so children, including my own, have more diverse, multicultural, and inclusive options.
Filled with an empowering message and page after page of beautiful illustrations, Curly Hair Chose Me is a wonderful addition to any home or school library.
