As Henry writes his sci-fi opus he must cope with the voracious sexual appetites of his new found muse and his bi-curious girlfriend while unraveling the mysteries of the bet between Heinlein and L. Ron Hubbard. Worse, all of Henry's efforts may all be for naught if he can't unravel his own troubled past that cost him both his first marriage and his promising marketing career. Henry is acerbic, talented and an extremely demanding soul on those who are closest to him, family and lovers alike. He takes no prisoners himself included. Exasperated by his ex-wife and girlfriends this once successful marketer also knows he is also running out of time as he approaches middle age.
In an act of desperation Henry reunites with an old college flame Jessie, a polyamorous soul who reignites his passion for writing. He does so knowing that their breakup was the result of a sordid ménage a trois. A failed science fiction author, he decides with her encouragement to undertake a feminist rewriting of Robert Heinlein's seminal science fiction classic a "Stranger in A Strange Land."
Henry becomes obsessed with the barroom bet between Robert Heinlein and L. Ron Hubbard some seventy years ago as to who could start a bona fide religion. A popular meme states that the two men shared a strange bond that included the sharing of Robert Heinlein's polyamorous wife. From that improbable bond came Heinlein's seminal science fiction classic "Stranger in A Strange Land" and from L. Ron Hubbard the creation of the controversial Scientology.
Unlike Heinlein's Smith, Henry's protagonist Charlotte is a woman that he hopes to use as a foil to expose the hypocrisy of religion. However; the only hypocrisy that Henry seems to be exposing is his own inherent misogyny as his muse Jessie constantly reminds him during the writing of a "Curious Eve."
To make matter worse, Henry also finds himself struggling to suppress the voracious sexual appetites of the one woman he truly loves: his muse Jessie. Jessie seems determined to turn the tables on the womanizing Henry by reminding him of Jessie's rules, a list of do's and don'ts for remaining in a successful polyamorous relationship. She is determined to make him woke.
Slowly Jessie draws him into her swinger lifestyle and brings him along her erotic adventures. Henry becomes alarmed at the similarities between Heinlein and himself particularly in regards to sharing Jessie. Just how far will he go to be with the woman he loves?
Just as Henry nears the breaking point with Jessie's sexual antics another attractive and influential woman enters his life and introduces the agnostic Henry to a powerful publisher. To Henry's consternation the publisher urges him to "L Ron Hubbard this sucker" and start a feminist church fashioned after the heroine in his novel. Henry fears he that he will find himself mired in a church sex scandal and other controversies that would make L. Ron Hubbard's Scientology seem mainstream.
