Les conventions vestimentaires soulignent la hiérarchie des apparences: chacun doit paraître ce qu'il est. Mais chacun peut aussi paraître ce qu'il veut, et dès le XVIIe siècle, le jeu des modes, la montée de la civilisation urbaine entraînent l'effritement des signes vestimentaires.Signe distinctif, le vêtement est objet de nécessité. De la production des tissus à la confection des vêtements et à leur entretien, toute une économie se met en place, à la fois cause et conséquence des transformations de l'habillement. Le tissu est un langage et ses agencements, le jeu des dévoilements et de dissimulation d'une robe, les ampleurs et les resserrements d'un costume illustrent l'évolution des moeurs, de la pudeur, de l'hygiène, de l'imaginaire.Le vêtement, comme le livre, diffuse et multiplie des informations sans cesse croissantes et tous, peu à peu, apprennent à le maîtriser. Ainsi se joue avant la Révolution une transformation capitale pour les sociétés occidentales. L'histoire des apparences enregistre tous les conflits politiques, religieux, sociaux de l'ancien monde, permettant de comprendre les logiques de l'avenir, celles des sociétés de consommation.Daniel Roche est professeur à l'Université de Paris I et directeur d'études à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences sociales. Il est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur les Lumières et sur l'histoire de la société, notamment Le Peuple de Paris et Les Républicains des Lettres.
