Con un manifiesto deseo de interdisciplinariedad, los estudios aqui recogidos examinan tanto ejemplos concretos de lo oral, lo visual o lo escrito en el contexto de la conformacion y difusion de la cultura aurea, como las frecuentes interrelaciones y trasvases entre estos diversos cauces. Por lo que respecta a la cultura escrita del periodo, se abordan temas como la presencia de la literatura en inventarios de bibliotecas de miembros de "clases trabajadoras", o el contexto literario e ideologico que explica las reticencias de algunos poetas a dar a la imprenta su obra. Otros estudios tratan las relaciones entre cultura visual y tradicion escrita. Dicha perspectiva permite ver La Fabula de Palas y Aracne de Velazquez como "jeroglifico" de la complejidad intelectual de la creacion artistica; o analizar el uso de las alegorias mitologicas entre los elementos de accion teatral o parateatral y de ornamentacion en fiesta religiosas del siglo XVII. La cultura festiva de la epoca da pie, asimismo, al estudio del simbolismo visual de emblemas y empresas en las fiestas caballerescas: de la armonizacion de lo oral, lo visual y lo escrito en las celebraciones madrilenas por la beatificacion de Santa Rosa de Lima: o del influjo de la cultura simbolica en carteles impresos y cortejos publicos para la convocatoria de justas poeticas. Las evocaciones visuales transmitidas en textos poeticos o dramaticos tambien son objeto de atencion en varios articulos. Asi, se profundiza en la ecfrasis de arquitecturas funebres a partir de un soneto de Gongora; en la simbologia de los colores en los Siglos de Oro y sus complejas aplicaciones en la literatura aurea; en la evocacion escenografica y situaciones mediante acotaciones implicitas en obras teatrales de Melchor Fernandez de Leon, o en el uso que hace Lope de su "autorretrato" en personajes de su teatro cortesano como estrategia de autopromocion. Las relaciones entre escritura y oralidad articulan otros trabajos que abordan cuestiones tan destacables como la consideracion de la maledicencia y las imagenes que expresan su anonima capacidad ofensiva en la literatura de los Siglos de Oro; los aspectos de la oralidad detectables en la obra de Jose Perez de Montoro y, en especial, de modismos, paremias y cantos populares; la delimitacion genetica, pragmatica y cronologica de manifestaciones literarias a caballo entre lo oral y lo escrito como los villancicos paraliturgicos, o el estudio de la discontinuidad geografica de las variantes en un romance sobre un asunto de honor. Tambien se tratan las diferentes modalidades y el uso aleccionado de un genero de probado atractivo popular como es la jacara de sucesos. Otros articulos consideran el reflejo literario de hechos historicos de relevante trascendencia. Se analiza, asi, el fenomeno critico de la Campana de Velilla y su ocasional asociacion con el conflicto de los moriscos; o un dialogo de Palafox y Mendoza que auna elementos costumbristas y noticieros con juicios de politica interior y exterior. Asimismo, un cartel impreso con proverbios "en imagenes" permite adentrarse en el estudio del trasvase escrito y visual de un "genero" de tradicion oral.
