Siendo una especie tranquila por naturaleza, su antecesor el Gato montés africano se adaptó rápidamente a las personas, permitiéndolas aproximarse al principio, acariciarle después, y finalmente, ser mantenido en confortables hogares. Este gato, apasionado e inteligente, premió a los humanos acurrucándose en su regazo y demostrando su cariño ronroneando, a cambio de cama y comida. Este truco, al menos así nos lo parece, de ronronear es un único y asombroso fenómeno, pues logra producir placer al más insensible de los dueños. Un granjero podría trabajar todo el día en los campos y volver a casa con los huesos molidos. En ese momento su gato saltaría sobre su regazo y simplemente acurrucándose y ronroneando le alejaría la fatiga rápidamente, tanto del cuerpo como del alma. Muchas personas se ahorrarían mucho dinero en los psicólogos si cambiaran las consultas por un gato. Si no me cree pruebe a realizar este experimento: permita a su gato que se acurruque junto a usted en su cama y déjele que ronronee unos instantes; con seguridad dormirá con más placer e intensidad que en toda su vida. El gato, no obstante, ha sido objeto de no pocos desprecios y por ello podemos encontrar refranes que nos lo mencionan despectivamente, como cuando nos advierten "Que no te den gato por liebre", o cuando nos critican diciéndonos aquello de "Eres más huraño que un gato", olvidándose eso del ronroneo que hemos mencionado antes. También es frecuente que se diga a los niños que "Tienes las uñas más largas que un gato", o a una ardiente mujer se la critique porque "Parece una gata en celo", del mismo modo que tener un gato negro cerca se considera un síntoma de mal augurio. Afortunadamente hay quien sale en defensa de estos pequeños felinos, como el cantante Roberto Carlos cuando nos dice que "El gato que está triste y azul..." o esa canción infantil que nos habla de "Estaba el señor Don Gato sentadito en su tejado...". En ambos casos se trata de sensibilizar a los humanos para que comprendamos a estos animales, lo mismo que hizo aquel músico español cuando compuso "El gato montés", el más emblemático y famoso de todos los pasodobles. Tantas veces hemos oído la frase "Se llevan como el perro y el gato", que nos la hemos terminado por creer. Antagonistas por naturaleza, con un sentido de la territorialidad y de sus obligaciones totalmente diferentes, aparentemente resulta bastante difícil que perros y gatos se pongan de acuerdo y que puedan convivir juntos. Depredador por instinto, especialmente hacia los ratones y los pájaros, imprevisible en sus reacciones y sin ningún deseo de proteger a sus amos, el gato suele ser el señor de la casa. Su gran facilidad para adaptarse a cualquier ambiente, incluso a vivir al aire libre y sin hogar, hace que suela aceptar sin problemas convivir con humanos o con los de su misma especie. La historia, la leyenda y hasta los cuentos infantiles han estado plagados de gatos, maravillosos algunos y terroríficos otros, como el emblemático Gato con Botas que era capaz de correr más que un gigante con sus botas de las siete leguas. También son conocidos, aunque algo más malvados, esa pareja de gatos llamados Si y Am que se dedicaban a amargar la vida y amores de la perrita Reina en "La dama y el vagabundo", lo mismo que aquel tan perverso que no dejaba en paz ni a Cenicienta ni a sus alegres ratones mágicos, convertidos gracias a una hada madrina en guapos mozos de carruaje.
