¿Los universales son cosas, conceptos o nombres? Esta pregunta parece natural. La cuestión de los universales es otra manera de decir las cosas, los conceptos y las palabras. Sin embargo, no hay allí nada "natural". Lo que comprueba el historiador de la filosofía en cuanto deja los problemas "eternos" para ir al detalle de los corpus filosóficos y a la gesta de las tradiciones interpretativas, es que la estructura problemática impuesta a los universales por la triple alianza del realismo, del conceptualismo y del nominalismo es aquella que la escolástica de la antigüedad tardía, en particular la neoplatónica de los siglos V y VI, impuso primeramente como grilla de lectura de las Categorías de Aristóteles. Antes de que los medievales se pregunten si los "universales" eran cosas, conceptos o palabras, los neoplatónicos se preguntaron si las categorías de Aristóteles eran seres, nóemas o sonidos vocales. La pregunta que se plantea es entonces saber cómo, por qué razones y por cuál iniciativa, esa grilla pasó de las categorías a los universales. ¿Pero, con ello, de dónde viene el "problema" que no solamente ha suscitado diez siglos de discusiones, sino que también ha permitido la eclosión de las tesis filosóficas fuertes y coherentes denominadas "nominalismo" y "realismo"? Quizás por el hecho de que "la cuestión de los universales" recubre un conjunto de preguntas que, dentro del movimiento complejo de la exégesis del conjunto del corpus aristotélico, han cristalizado alrededor del Isagoge de Porfirio sin estar todas enunciadas por el Isagoge. De tal manera, habría que decir que el Árbol de Porfirio esconde un bosque. Esta es la tesis que defendemos aquí.

Alain de Libera nació en 1948. Luego de doctorarse en filosofía ha sido profesor y director de estudios de la École Practique des Hautes Études y ha ejercido la docencia universitaria también en la Université de Genéve y en el Collége de France, especializándose en la historia de la filosofía y la teología en el Occidente medieval. Entre sus obras cabe mencionar "Averroes et l'averroïsme" (1991), "Penser au Moyen Age" (1991), "La Philosophie médiévale" (1993), "La Mystique rhénane" (1994), "L'art des généralités" (1999), "Naissance du sujet" (2007), "La quëte de l'identité" (2008), y "La doublé révolution: l'acte de penser" (2014).
