About the Book

Los cuatro hermanos Ceppi Rossetti, originarios de la comuna de Morbio Superiore (hoy Breggia), en la Suiza italiana, son los pioneros de la familia Ceppi en Chile. Juan, Hermenegildo, Santiago y Pedro, en el orden de llegada a Chile, se establecieron en este país entre los años 1872 y 1896. Siguieron la huella de su tío materno, Benito Rossetti, quien había iniciado un taller de marmolería en Santiago de Chile en 1852.Los cuatro hermanos estuvieron ligados profesionalmente al rubro de la construcción. Juan y Santiago a la cabeza de la empresa de mármoles, yeso y ladrillos, Hermenegildo como arquitecto y constructor, y más tarde, junto a Pedro, como empresario en el ramo de la madera. La especialización no excluía la colaboración. En forma permanente se les ve interviniendo y ayudando en los negocios de los otros hermanos. Además efectuaron inversiones inmobiliarias, desarrollos urbanísticos e inversiones mineras donde actúan en conjunto o separadamente.El presente libro es el resultado de una larga investigación para rescatar del olvido la labor de estos cuatro suizos. Con toda seguridad no es toda su obra la reseñada pero una parte importante para la arquitectura de Santiago y de Chile.El autor, Enrique Ceppi di Lecco Lazo, es nieto de Hermenegildo Ceppi Rosseti. Parte importante de su infancia y juventud la vivió en la chacra La Blanca, en la comuna de La Cisterna, la propiedad comprada por su abuelo. Aunque no conoció a Hermenegildo alcanzó a ver su oficina, al final del corredor de la casona familiar, donde se apilaban rollos de planos y libros de arquitectura entre carpetas y archivadores de papeles contables. Solo una pequeña parte de esos documentos fueron rescatados y conservados por el hijo menor de Hermenegildo, Sergio Ceppi Mayol de Lupe, quien escribió un primer relato de la historia familiar.Enrique, a su vez, conservó los archivos de su padre, Sergio, y continuó la tarea de rescatar del olvido los orígenes de la familia Ceppi establecida en Chile. Después de culminar su vida profesional, Enrique inició la labor de ordenar y clasificar los papeles y se puso el desafío de completar y ampliar el trabajo iniciado por su padre. Comenzó una investigación para buscar información en las bibliotecas y archivos públicos que duró dos años.
