El escritor narra el asesinato de una ávara anciana usurera llamada Elena Ivanovna, cometido por el estudiante universitario Raskolnikov que tenia problemas económicos para continuar con sus estudios, Raskolnikov, después de matar a la prestamista y a su hermana con un hacha se apodera de todas las alhajas. Luego se deshace del arma homicida y esconde las alhajas en el hueco de un patio, cerca de un edificio. Los días pasan agobiando al joven criminal con delirio de persecución y pesadillas. Su conciencia vigilante se subleva y no lo deja en paz. La policía lo cita por ciertas dudas que tiene con su persona con relación al crimen de la vieja usurera y, cuando le mencionan el crimen Raskolnikov se desmaya. Se agrava la salud del joven Raskolnikov y sufre de insomnio por la intensa tensión nerviosa que padece. El joven se comporta como un loco y pierde los papeles con suma facilidad. El solo se va delatando por su actitud sospechosa. El cree que ya todos sospechan de su persona. En todas partes ve como alucinado un dedo acusador. Raskolnikov vive abandonado a su suerte, su amigo del alma Rasumikin, lo reconforta y le cambia los andrajos por ropa nueva. En los momentos mas difíciles, Sonia Marmeladora, siempre lo esta visitando por que lo ama. En una visita cuando Raskolnikov se sorprende al verla Sonia Marmeladora le dice: vine a saber como te encuentras y el le responde: Sonia siempre te has portado muy bien conmigo, no lo merezco y ella le dice que no diga eso por que se siente a gusto con tu compañía. Y el así mismo se dice, pobre Sonia, es tan buena. Se que me ama pero yo nada puedo ofrecerle. Se merece a alguien mejor que yo. Sonia se despide de el. Raskolnikov lleno de temor y de dudas se queda dormido, así paso el día. a la mañana siguiente salió a la calle y anduvo al azar, finalmente ingresó en un café ayi tomó un té y leyó los periodicos de los ultimos 5 dias, buscando las nocias que hablaran sobre el crimen. En la cafetería se encuentra con Zamertoff, con quien habla sobre el crimen que se cometio con la usurera. Zamertoff queda intrigado con la conducta de Raskolnikov y se dice a si mismo: muy extrano su comportamiento, me dio la impresion de estar asustado y por eso esa actitud, se lo contare al inspector de policia. Se despidieron y el joven raskolnikov estuvo por la calle vagando horas y horas sin rumbo fijo, sin dejar de pensar en el crimen que cometio, y cuando regresaba a su casa se encontró con su amigo Dimitri y ambos fueron a su casa. Alla los esperaba su madre Pulquerria y su hija Dunia. Luego de una conversacion, Raskolnikov se desmaya y lloran las dos mujeres. Raskolnikov recupera su salud que estaba quebrantada, gracias a los cuidados de su amigo Dimitri Razumikin y las atenciones de un medico amigo. El joven Raskolnikov alterna entrevistas con su adorada madre y con su hermana. El joven universitario va a casa de Sonia y juntos leen la biblia. Los dos jovenes se aman en silencio. Posteriormente Raskolnikov le confiesa a Sonia que el es el asesino de la usurera; ella queda tremenamente impresionada le dice que jamas lo abandonara y que siempre estara a su lado, el joven por fin decide entregarse a las autoridades y confiesa su culpa. Um mes despues es condenado a 8 años de trabajos forzados de segunda categoria en siberia.
