Few crimes will stir the emotions like the murder of Caylee Anthony. Anger, astonishment, sympathy - mostly an overwhelming, heart rending sadness. Caylee was only two years old when she died. Who murders a toddler? Why? How can anyone be objective about such a crime?But we must try. Orlando, Florida is the home of Disney. A tourist attraction which in the days before Covid, and hopefully once more when it is finally conquered, brings families together from all over the world. They fly into Orlando International Airport, hire a car and within a few miles are safely ensconced in their hotel. The City Beautiful, as it likes to be known. The City of fun. But aside from the glittering tourist attractions, away from the rides and the glamour, Mickey Mouse and Universal Studios Orlando has a darker side. Most big cities do. It was into such a darker side that Caylee was born on the 9th of August 2005. Yet, for this little girl, it was not a darkness caused by economics, rather one created by emotional factors.Caylee's mum, Casey, was just twenty years old. No father was listed on her birth certificate. On the face of it, Casey herself appeared to have had the chance of a steady upbringing. Her father, George, was a police officer who worked in the homicide department. The family lived in a small house, yet one in a pleasant district of the city. But along the way something happened. Maybe more than once, and by the time she reached her teens Casey was a troubled girl. The perceived picture was that her problems were manifold. Pam Bondi was an assistant state attorney based in Tampa who had come to know plenty about the unstable young woman. 'Casey Anthony, she's a habitual liar, a troubled human being. Clearly, she needed help, ' she observed.So, there we have it. Single mom gives birth to a daughter, has her own problems and cannot cope with her baby. For some reason - post natal depression, desperation, wickedness; we know not what - she kills her. Simple. Black and white. Except, of course, that is not how it was. As of today, nobody has been convicted of Caylee's murder. It is not even clear that she was a victim of homicide. Casey has served time, but for relatively minor crimes associated with her daughter's disappearance. She is not a convicted killer. Therefore, she is not a killer. Not in the eyes of the law, and therefore, not in the eyes of society. At least, that is how it should be. But not, maybe, how it is. A troubled girl, yes. A confused girl. Definitely. Even possibly a victim herself. An alleged target of domestic sexual abuse. But the question remains. Why wasn't Casey convicted?
