About the Author: Charles Henry Haile was in his fifties and unmarried when he died. Haile dwelt in a Chicago apartment building, seemingly in impoverished circumstances. He was of a cheerful but laconic nature. Although apparently in good health, he quite suddenly died at age fifty-eight in his apartment and was found the next day with a smile on his lips. Next to nothing is known about Haile's life. He was born in Peoria, Illinois, in about 1884 and perished in 1940 in Chicago. He was awarded BA and MA degrees at Northwestern University. He earned his PhD in English literature in 1910 at Princeton University. He was an accomplished linguist, fluent in Spanish, French, and German. He taught Latin and Greek in several colleges and universities and was fairly familiar with Norse and old English. Just before his untimely death, he was planning to make a new translation of Homer.
