El avance de la ciencia en el siglo XX ha llevado al hombre del siglo XXI a una espiral de interrogantes que lo ha precipitado a resumir sus dudas de forma simplista: Dios no existe porque ya no es necesario para justificar las maravillas de la naturaleza.

Hoy la confrontación entre ciencia y fe están claramente definidas, al igual que la sociedad: dividida entre creencia y descreimiento.

¿daremos la espalda a la ciencia porque se la percibe como una amenaza para Dios?

Son tiempos difíciles para el creyente. Pero, tal vez por ello, tiempos apasionantes para la búsqueda de una fe auténtica y dinámica. Una fe personal, interiorizada y experimentada, lo bastante fuerte como para entablar debate con una sociedad que ha dejado de creer en la trascendencia.

La tesis defendida por el autor es que la crisis que enfrenta la fe cristiana en el siglo XXI no es fortuita ni se nos ha venido encima de repente, sin anticipar datos que nos advirtieran. Estaba ya presente en el siglo XX y hunde sus raíces en épocas anteriores. Los elementos que nos han llevado a la confrontación actual vienen de lejos y se han desarrollado paulatinamente. Nos conviene pues conocer su historia y analizarlos a fondo.

Para hacer frente a los "ataques" actuales de la ciencia, -afirma el autor- la fe cristiana ha de cambiar sus actitudes del pasado, marcadas por la "estática", la "contemplación" y la "mística", por una actitud dinámica de participación que aporte a la sociedad propuestas concretas. Es decir, por una acción evangelizadora contemporánea que dinamice la vivencia del evangelio frente al hedonismo, la pérdida de valores, la indiferencia hacia los ideales de cualquier clase y el egocentrismo enraizado en nuestra sociedad.

Haciendo suyas las palabras del científico cristiano Frances Collins, director del proyecto Genoma Humano, en su obra "El lenguaje de Dios" cuando afirma: El Dios de la Biblia es también el Dios del genoma. Se le puede adorar en la catedral y en el laboratorio. Su creación es majestuosa, sobrecogedora, compleja y bella, y no puede, por tanto, estar en guerra consigo misma", el autor aporta respuestas coherentes a los problemas de la fe en todas sus dimensiones.

Una valiosa herramienta de ayuda para líderes y educadores cristianos cuando se ven confrontados por preguntas difíciles de jóvenes estudiantes. Pero también cuando ellos mismos se ven asediados por inevitables crisis de fe o por el dilema que se planteó Benedicto XVI en su visita al campo de extermino de Awuschwizt en Polonia: "Dónde estabas Señor cuando todo esto sucedía".
