About the Book

It was a very nice spring day in Kansas City, Missouri. The squirrels were gathering their nuts and the birds were chirping the morning song. The red robin was hopping around and the blue jays were busy having babies. Mama Kramer blue jay went to get daddy Kramer. "Come here, Come here" she chirped. Daddy came and saw the beautiful babies. They all had their little mouths open for some food. Blue Jays don't like worms as the Robins do, they like peanuts. Mama Kramer had 4 babies, 3 girls, and one boy. The boy was a bit odd. He was wide-eyed and restless.
Mama flew to find some nuts for her babies while daddy stayed by the nest to babysit. Baby Kramer (the boy) started to take a look at his surroundings. He looked down and wow that was a long way down! He looked up and the sun twinkled in his eyes and he had to shut them. His sisters were all cuddled up together and sleeping. He thought "I hope someday I will be able to fly like daddy!" While restless, his dad came over to him and said, "Son soon you will learn to fly and find your own nuts. I will have you fly with me until you know how to take care of yourself." Baby Kramer jumped in his nest and was excited to learn to fly.
The lady on the porch;
The lady began to talk to the doves and squirrels but she didn't notice Kramer. So Kramer started to chatter and yell loudly. All the birds looked at him and said "are you crazy?" Kramer kept making all kinds of noise to try and get the lady's attention. She looked up a couple of times and sat down on her patio. Kramer thought "I guess I have to go down there to get my peanut. So Kramer swooped down and was in the grass. He started to chatter again trying to get her attention. Suddenly the squirrels would go up to her and she would give them a peanut. This made Kramer so angry.
Kramer and Rosey;
Kramer went back with the flock and now they all respect him. Winter was coming to them quickly and they were all building their nest. They went and got straw from the farms in Missouri to make a strong nest. Kramer noticed a blue jay that was doing it all by herself. Kramer went over to her and asked "can I help you?" "Yes, please, I am new with the flock here and no one seems to notice me," she said sadly. "Come on, I will introduce you to everybody," said Kramer. "Hey fellow blue jays, I have a blue jay here that would like to introduce herself," Kramer said. The blue jay said, "I am here to help our flock in any way I can." The flock flapped their wings as if to clap.
Four flew the coop;
Kramer was a good daddy and he fed his family regularly. He fought the hawks and crows, he flew up and down and everywhere around. He taught his son how to fly and his girls, Rosey taught. In a bird's world when your children flew from the coop they never returned. This is how birds are, they love and take care but once the baby birds learn to fly it is a permanent goodbye. Kramer and Rosey did everything together, they flew up and they flew down and everywhere around. Kramer was an adventurous bird and a little crazy. He sat there on the branch of the tree thinking. "I wonder if we could fly to the big water. I have heard other birds talk about it. I don't want to spend another winter here, it is way too cold!" His eyes were wide open and he flew toward the Sassafras tree. "Rosey, Rosey! Where has she gone?"
Flying South Together;
They started their flight flying up and down and everywhere around. They acted like two young and carefree birds. The longer they flew the warmer the weather became. They flew over farm fields, lakes, big busy cities, cotton fields, and green forests. They would stop at a lake and drink water and eat some berries. They would stop into the deep dark forest and find a tree to sleep in. The atmosphere was different from Kansas City! The hoot owl knew they were there, the nightingale saw them also. The only light was the lightning bugs. "Kramer, do you think we made the right decision!?"
