About the Author: Neal Bolton has interacted with coyotes for nearly 50 years. He is an engineer and has written a number of technical books, but he is also an avid outdoorsman and hunter and has previously written on outdoor topics as well. Neal was inspired to write Coyote-Proof when he realized that for many people, dealing with the threat of coyotes was completely unnatural - something they'd never even thought about, let alone grown up with. And so, when their pet is attacked, killed, and eaten by a coyote, they are shocked to suddenly be faced with the reality that coyotes are predators. Growing up in a small, rural community, Neal often had odd jobs as a young man. Most of the jobs he had were agricultural, working on the home place or for folks who grew various crops, raised sheep, or ran cattle in the hills, where coyotes were a constant threat to livestock. It was a threat he was well acquainted with, even while doing what he could to minimize its impact. As an adult, he has hiked, fished, and hunted throughout much of the western United States and has acquired a realistic understanding of the relationship between predator and prey. He currently lives in California but also lived many years in Montana and Idaho. All in all, Neal has been exposed to coyotes for more than half a century. Neal's goal in writing this book is to help others in terms of understanding what it means to live in close proximity with a medium-size predator.
