Cowley's Voyage Round the Globe IN PRINT FOR THE FIRST TIME
A complete account of Cowley's adventures RECONSTRUCTED from different original source versions (all produced by Cowley himself)l.
William Ambrosia Cowley accidentally sailed into the history books in August 1683 when he boarded the Defense thinking he would navigate the ship on a trading expedition to Haiti. In reality, he had been tricked into joining a pirating expedition that would take him from England to Virginia to Africa, around Cape Horn, up and down the western coast of the Americas, and across the Pacific Ocean into the East Indies (Guam, Philippines, China, Java), around the Cape of Good Hope and back to England. In three and a half years he circumnavigated the globe, making Cowley just the third Englishman to accomplish that feat, and the first in a hundred years.
This reluctant pirate sailed with the likes of William Dampier, Basil "Baz" Ringrose, Captain Eaton, Captain Swan and Captain Edward Cook. He was one of the first Englishman to draw up a map of the Galapagos Islands, giving English names to many of the islands, and naming one after himself. In the Galapagos today, the tiny Cowley's Enchanted Island is still known as Isla Cowley.
Inside you'll find Cowley's own astounding account of his years among the most notorious pirates of his age. Be prepared for a fascinating, sometimes shocking, first-hand glimpse into the pirating and sailing life of the seventeenth-century.
