About the Book

I am a computer teacher who works at a public high school in Dobbs Ferry, NY. I teach at an all-boys residential treatment facility. The district educates approximately 250 male residential and day students in Kindergarten-Grade 12 who have emotional, behavioral and learning problems in the Elementary/Middle and Junior/Senior High Schools. The campus is beautiful. I recall my interview and feeling like a college professor as I drove up to their guarded gate and saw acres of land surrounded by big buildings and cute cottages. Many cottages actually. I felt like I was in a little community, kind of like the wizard of Oz, only with deer passing by and students walking to and from the buildings. It was not going to be a typical interview at a typical public school that I was familiar with teaching. Knowing my students live on campus was a hard concept to grasp. As a person, you are curious and a million questions come to mind but as a professional, you understand that you are hired to do your job and only your job. I've always kept my personal life, personal.... until COVID hit. It all came to fast. BAMN!! The principal is holding a meeting telling us we will be closed for the next 2 weeks and to create a lesson plan packet that will be distributed to the cottages and mailed to our day students. WHAT Ok, the panic begins but I am the type of person who works very well under pressure. I love the moment and I immediately get to work. I'm thinking.... hmmm... I don't even have my own WIFI at home and I make decent money as a teacher in NY. How am I going to create lesson plans that are not specifically on the computer? I know the students who live on campus do not have any access to technology at all and that's 75% of our student body. Once they do get devices, we have WIFI issues. I barely get cell phone service in my classroom. Hmmmm. This should be interesting...Handouts are great. But they work independently and answer questions or do matching and that's it. I wanted something meaningful, something my students would enjoy, something I can have them do and then continue to do in the computer lab. I tailor all my lessons to fit my students. No textbook would do the trick and Google Classroom wasn't an option just yet without the technology...So I thought...A hah! We are going old-school! Time to take out the pencil and paper and write. And so, we did. Including myself.A little bit of journaling each day. That was my lesson planning. If they had access to the Internet, they also had to practice their typing skills on Nitrotype, an exciting awesome typing game they love. So, we wrote and wrote. We tackled our writing skills and practice, our handwriting skills and expressed our inner thoughts and daily new life schedules! It was emotional at times and we wrote and wants to share a few stories that we felt appropriate to publish. LOLIncluded are stories some of my students felt comfortable sharing and stories from myself during our COVID time since mid-March until now, August 31st, 2020. Many stories are not edited to keep the true meaning and expression of my students. As a business and computer teacher, sometimes you simply need to keep that capital I a lowercase I for style.
