Courage, Sacrifice and Betrayal - The Story of the Victoria Rifles of Canada - 6th Battalion in the First World War is a microcosm of the countless sad, heroic, and everyday experiences of Canadian battalions that fought in the European theater. Over 25 battalions were formed to serve as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I but only 5 battalions actually fought as a unit in the front line trenches. In attempts to prevent the dismantling of his battalion, Lieutenant Gascoigne met with Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden, 1st Viscount Walter Long Secretary of State for the Colonies and Lieutenant-General Sir Julian Byng Commanding Officer of the Canadian Corps. Despite his efforts, the 6th Battalion was eventually divided and sent as reinforcements to four other battalions. The Commanding Officers anger, frustration and disenchantment with the politicians resonate through his personal accounts and letters. The authors grandfather, Sergeant Edward Lewis Pyves (Military Medal), and great uncle, Lance Corporal Stanley Pyves, served with the 6th Battalion along with Private A.Y. Jackson, the future Group of Seven artist. About the Author

Rick Pyves is a published author, avid historian, and genealogist who grew up in Montreal, Quebec. Rick is a graduate of Concordia (Sir George Williams) University and McGill University and holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing. His first book, Night Madness: A Rear Gunners Story of Love, Courage, and Hope in World War II, was published by Red Deer Press in October 2012 after a five-year writing and research effort. Based on interviews, painstaking archival research, and letters from a long-distance love affair captured in daily correspondence, Rick has weaved together his fathers tale into a touching love story and one mans very personal war. Prior to embarking on a career in writing, Rick held a senior management position with a major financial services company as SVP Marketing, responsible for both marketing and public relations. Rick has held board positions as a Director of Tourism Toronto (1992-2007) and more recently as a Director of Credit Canada (2005-2011) and has chaired the Board Marketing Committee for both organizations. Ricks keen interest in military history stems from both his father, Ron Pyves experiences in Bomber Command in WWII and his grandfather Edward Pyves and great uncle Stanley Pyves service with the 60th Battalion in WWI. Its these personal connections which have provided the driving force for Rick to research and reach out to other soldiers family members to tell their often heroic and exciting stories which have frequently not been told before.
