About the Book

The first edition of this seminal book appeared more than twenty years ago and was acknowledged as the first comprehensive overview of counseling psychology.

This long-anticipated new edition has been thoroughly updated to serve a new generation of undergraduate and graduate students, and all readers who want to know more about the field. It has been skillfully reorganized to clearly present the history of the field, its foundational principles and practices, its relationship to other psychological disciplines, and its four primary therapeutic approaches--psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and feminist multicultural.
About the Author: Charles J. Gelso, PhD, is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has published widely in the area of the therapeutic relationship in psychotherapy and the research training environment in graduate education. His most recent books are The Real Relationship in Psychotherapy: The Hidden Foundation of Change and Countertransference and the Therapist's Inner Experience: Perils and Possibilities (with Jeffrey A. Hayes). He has been the editor of Psychotherapy and the Journal of Counseling Psychology and has been given major awards in the field.

Elizabeth Nutt Williams, PhD, is a professor of psychology and dean of the core curriculum at St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public liberal arts honors college. Her most recent book, The Oxford Handbook of Feminist Multicultural Counseling Psychology (with Carol Enns), reflects her long-standing interest in the intersections of feminist and multicultural theories and their applications to counseling practice. She has received awards for her teaching as well as for her scholarship in psychotherapy process research from the Society for Psychotherapy Research and from APA Division 29 (Psychotherapy). She has served as president of APA Division 29, as newsletter editor and chair of the Section for the Advancement of Women for the Society of Counseling Psychology, and on numerous editorial boards (including Psychotherapy, Psychotherapy Research, Psychology of Women Quarterly, and The Counseling Psychologist).

Bruce R. Fretz, PhD, (1939-2012) was a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park, throughout most of his career, and he was the long-standing training director or codirector of the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program at Maryland. He was also a leader in the field of counseling psychology, having served in many capacities in APA Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology), including being division president in 1991-1992. He published widely in the major journals in counseling psychology, and was the editor of The Counseling Psychologist from 1985-1990. During his career, he was an acclaimed teacher, who loved to teach introductory psychology to university undergraduates as well as advanced doctoral-level courses. Along with Charles Gelso, he was the coauthor of all three editions of Counseling Psychology. To learn about his career, read Gelso, Hill, and O'Brien's (2013) "In Memoriam" in The Counseling Psychologist.
