Il critico che studia soltanto le circostanze di tempo, di luogo, di per sone, cioe di clima, di temperamento, d'organi smo, di famiglia, di patria, di stirpe, d'eta, ole cagioni estrinseche tutte, cosi generali, come par ticolari, l'ambiente, com'oggi dicono traducendo le milieu de' francesi, per vedere come nasca ogni libro di scienza, ogni opera d'arte, ogni fatto grande, la storia de'popoli, la vita, il sentimento, le credenze, i dubbj dell'artista, dello scrittore, ci fa comparire la natura umana quasi stromento a macchina, e, discorrendo dell' uomo, parla di tutto fuorche del l'uomo. E dentro di noi l'uomo vivente, ed essi mirano a tutto cio ch'e fuori di noi. Nella. Cri. Tica interiore, viceversa, passiamo da'fatti esterni, dall'opera, dagli eventi, alle cagioni psicologiche, all'uomo vero, al pensiero suo, alla volonta, e indi mostriamo, date le circostanze d'ogni maniera, come la vita dell'animo si paleso nell'arte, nella scienza, nella operosita privata e pubblica, e la tale o talvm gente nella sua storia, dando e ricevendo, trasfor mando e resistendo, vincitori 0 vinti; e l' uomo comparisce allora quasi stromento musicale, che manda vive armonie. L'aria, la luce, la stanza, l'uditorio, l'educazione, possono sull'arte del sona tore; ma nulla conta poi se questi non abbia in gegno, cuore, volonta cosi, possono le circostanze ma l'ambiente stesso e opera dell'uomo in gran parte. Non-dobbiamo escludere niente, non l'interno, ne l'esterno; ma quello e il piu, ed e la ragione prima. In questi miei scritti di storia e d'arte ho alla critica cercato quel criterio. E quindi ho badato alla fedelta; perche il critico e un giudice, la sen tenza del quale si fonda su'documenti e su'testi moni. Talche nell'esporre i pensieri altrui mi son valso per lo piu delle parole loro, come nella Filo sofia di Dante; che il Venturi ha si bene illustrato con le sue similitudini Dantesche, e che dal pro fessor Giovanni Franciosi ricevera lume novello, quando il signor Le Monnier ne pubblichera il vo lume. Mi sono ingegnato di considerare gli argo menti da ogni lato; perche, guardando le cose da un lato solo, si puo far dire 'a un uomo quel che ci piace. Ho fuggito i preambo'li, le digressioni, le dissertazioni, che ormai sono le nove parti su dieci, quando si tratta d'un soggetto qualunque. Age quod agis: vieni all'argomento. Lettore mio buono, l'im portanza delle materie che s'accolgono nel presente libro, ti' renda benigno a' difetti dello scrittore.
