C'était pendant l'hiver précédent que le prince Otchakoff avait fait son apparition dans le monde parisien, et en quelques mois, par ses gains ou ses pertes, surtout par le sang-froid imperturbable et le sourire dédaigneux avec lesquels il acceptait une culotte de cinq cent mille francs, il s'était conquis une réputation tapageuse qui avait failli donner la jaunisse au prince Savine, habitué depuis de longues années à se considérer orgueilleusement comme le seul Russe digne d'occuper la badauderie parisienne. C'était un petit homme chétif et maladif que ce prince Otchakoff et qui, n'ayant pas vingt-cinq ans, paraissait en avoir quarante, bien qu'il fût blond et imberbe. Dans ce Paris où l'on rencontre tant de physionomies ennuyées et vides, on n'avait jamais vu un homme si triste, et rien qu'à le regarder avec ses traits fatigués, ses yeux éteints, son visage jaune et ridé, son attitude morne, on était pris d'une irrésistible envie de bâiller. Après avoir essayé de tout il avait trouvé qu'il n'y avait que le jeu qui lui donnât des émotions, et il jouait pour se sentir vivre autant que pour faire du bruit en ce monde, ce qui était sa grande, sa seule ambition. Sa santé étant misérable, sa fortune étant inépuisable, le jeu était le seul excès qu'il pût se permettre, et il jouait comme d'autres s'épuisent, s'indigèrent ou s'enivrent.
About the Author: Nationalité France Né(e) à La Bouille (Seine-Maritime), le 20/05/1830 Mort(e) à Fontenay-sous-Bois (Val-de-Marne), le 18/07/1907 Biographie: Hector-Henri Malot dit Hector Malot, fait ses études au lycée Corneille de Rouen. Gustave Flaubert l'y a précédé dix ans plus tôt. Ensuite il entreprend des études de droit tout en travaillant pour son père, qui est notaire, et commence à écrire. En 1855, abandonnant ses études de droit, il s'installe à Paris et tente de faire représenter une première pièce, en vain. Pour assurer sa subsistance, il publie quelques articles. Il se retire chez ses parents et entreprend l'écriture de la trilogie Les Victimes d'amour. Le premier volume Les Amants publié en 1859 connaît un grand succès. En 1864, il fait construire à Fontenay-sous-Bois un chalet qu'il habitera jusqu'à sa mort. En 1867, il épouse Anna Dariès. Leur fille, Lucie, naît en 1868. En 1880, Anna décède. Hector Malot se remarie l'année suivante avec Marthe Oudinot de la Faverie, jeune femme alors âgée de 31 ans, avec laquelle il accomplit de nombreux voyages. En 1893, un an après l'écriture de En Famille, naît sa petite-fille Perrine (son prénom est celui de l'héroïne du roman). Malot n'est pas attiré par les salons littéraires, mais n'hésite pas à s'impliquer localement. Il est conseiller municipal de 1867 à 1885. Hector Malot a écrit plus d'une soixantaine de romans pour enfants et pour adultes. Les plus connus aujourd'hui sont ses romans pour enfants: Romain Kalbris(1869), Sans Famille(1878), En Famille(1893).
