A los 37 años, cuando se embarcó, ignoto, rumbo París, ya era demasiado tarde para librarse de todos los efectos culturales-existenciales que le había inoculado Buenos aires, ciudad que despierta en los más sensibles una opresiva pulsión hacia la melancolía, un entendimiento de lo que nos pasa como si fuéramos personajes de nuestras propias novelas y una oscilante lucidez. Julio Cortázar (1914-1984), sus cuentos, novelas, relatos y en especial el tono-estado de ánimo con que los escribe, introduce en la literatura en lengua española un cambio de perspectiva dentro de la producción narrativa, como si la distancia le permitiera ubicarse más carne adentro del argentino (porteño) que vive en su enorme figura, y sacar de ahí un arquetipo universal. Más allá del boom de la literatura latinoamericana -fenómeno que sus textos ayudaron a construir-, de su simpatía por las revoluciones cubana y sandinista y del encanto producido por la ternura de su prosa, Cortázar despliega (especialmente en Rayuela, publicada en 1963) la libertad creativa de alguien que se propone llevar hasta las últimas consecuencias la voluntad de transgredir el orden tradicional de una historia, el lenguaje desde donde la va contando y lo que deben ser sus criaturas.
