La correspondance de Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), redigee dans une prose latine rythmee sophistiquee et metaphorisee, est l'une des parties les moins explorees de l'oeuvre multiforme du grand poete. Dans ses treize lettres subsistantes, toutes ecrites pendant les annees d'exil (1302-1321), le genie multiforme de Dante s'adapte a la societe de son temps, en abordant les themes les plus divers: controverses philosophiques et courtoises sur la nature de l'amour, propagande politique pour la cause imperiale et contre Florence, defense passionnee du retour a Rome de la papaute, presentation de la Comedie, negociations pour son retour d'exil et pour son parti, secretariat pour une comtesse s'adressant a une reine... Cette correspondance n'a fait l'objet d'aucune grande edition-traduction en francais, et d'aucun commentaire de grande ampleur en France depuis les travaux desormais lointains d'Andre Pezard. En Italie meme, l'importance de travaux recents n'empeche pas de constater un malentendu concernant les lettres de Dante, qui sont toujours examinees a l'aune du reste de sa production, sans tenir compte des caracteristiques de l'art de la redaction epistolaire (ars dictaminis) qui conditionnait l'ecriture de tels textes a la generation du poete. La presente traduction-edition renouvelle la perception de ces textes en proposant un nouveau texte, parfois tres different de ceux etablis par les editions italiennes, et en mettant en lumiere son inscription dans la societe de son temps. Ce second tome affronte la partie centrale de la correspondance. En 1310-1311, le poete se fait politique pour soutenir le programme de restauration du pouvoir imperial en Italie du Nord mis en application par Henri VII de Luxembourg. Les trois grandes lettres imperiales V, VI et VII, destinees aux, pouvoirs italiens, a Florence et au roi des Romains, sont une extraordinaire ode a la monarchie universelle. Dante y reprend les arguments de la Monarchia, tout en deployant son inventivite rhetorique. Dans un feu d'artifice stylistique et conceptuel, toutes les ressources de sa culture sont convoquees sur un mode prophetique pour chanter l'avenement d'un nouvel age d'or, et menacer Florence rebelle des foudres d'un chatiment a la fois temporel et spirituel. Les lettres feminines VIII-X, plus courtes, sont de veritables orfevreries, non moins etonnantes. Dante, secretaire de la comtesse Gherardesca di Battifolle, y ecrit a la reine des Romains Marguerite de Brabant, deployant une rhetorique feminine pour chanter ce songe imperial . La presente traductioncommentaire propose un nouveau texte, et un commentaire mettant en valeur des sources et des modalites d'utilisation non reperees jusque-la.
