Correr uma ultramaratona em pleno deserto do Saara com uma mochila de 12kg nas costas? "175 vezes por minuto! Essa era a velocidade com que meu coração batia naquele momento. O frequencímetro cardíaco que eu trazia preso ao tórax, e que captava o número de batimentos do meu coração a cada instante, não parava de apitar. Isso significava que eu havia ultrapassado a frequência determinada previamente como limite de segurança. Pudera! Correr sobre um mar de areia fina, subindo e descendo dunas com mais de 15 metros de altura, com o sol ardendo inclemente no alto, não era pouca coisa. Todo esse ambiente explodia numa variedade incrível de cores: amarelo alaranjado da areia, azul brilhante do céu, vermelho brasa do sol, marrom claro da terra seca... O início da manhã já tinha me visto correr 25 quilômetros, ora sobre montanhas e terrenos pedregosos, ora afundando em dunas como essas que agora engoliam meus pés a cada passada. Como um corredor esgotado sempre pensa: 'aquilo não iria acabar nunca!' Até onde a vista alcançava eu não via uma nuvem ou sombra sequer que aliviasse o calor. Árvores para que eu pudesse correr por baixo e refrescar por alguns instantes? Nem pensar! As dunas haviam acabado. Pelo menos, por enquanto. Os dois quilômetros que eu começaria a correr seriam novamente de terra. E como a sola do pé doía! As pedrinhas que pareciam brotar do chão à medida que eu passava não respeitavam nem o solado de borracha do tênis. Na última hora e meia eu já havia ultrapassado dezenas de corredores. Cada corredor que ficava para trás me dava mais força pra continuar em ritmo forte, mesmo com as constantes reclamações do frequencímetro cardíaco. Precisei correr por mais dois quilômetros até avistar algo no horizonte que em nada combinava com o que eu conhecia sobre relevos e cores de desertos, muito menos com um corredor. Com uma suspeita em mente, continuei naquela direção tentando entender o que poderia ser. Minutos depois pude confirmar minha suposição. Aquele era o pórtico de entrada do acampamento que tanto torci pra surgir no horizonte. Eu havia chegado à região de Khermou, no coração do deserto do Saara! Completei, em pouco mais de quatro horas, os 30 quilômetros desse primeiro dia da Marathon des Sables, uma das ultramaratonas mais cascudas do planeta.
