About the Book

Erfassung und wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung aller in Mittelfranken und ausserhalb der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauern Nurnbergs erhaltenen oder uberlieferten Glasmalereien im Rahmen des internationalen Gesamtwerks. Neben bekannten Standorten wie Eichstatt und Rothenburg werden zahlreiche, bislang wenig beachtete Glasgemalde erschlossen und in ihre Zusammenhange eingeordnet. Selbst fur die reiche Glasmalereiproduktion der Durerzeit ergeben sich neue Erkenntnisse. Mit einer konsequent in den Text integrierten Bebilderung wird der anschauliche Nachvollzug erleichtert, mit einer betrachtlichen Erhohung des Anteils farbiger Abbildungen innerhalb der Reihe ein neuer Standard gesetzt. Der in zwei Teilen erscheinende Band behandelt alle in Mittelfranken sowie ausserhalb der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauern Nurnbergs erhaltenen Glasmalereien vom 13. Jahrhundert bis um 1550; den Glasmalereien in den Pfarreien St. Lorenz und St. Sebald werden zwei weitere Teilbande gewidmet. Im vorliegenden Band wurden etwa 675 Scheiben an 45 Standorten erfasst. Darunter befinden sich so bedeutendende Objekte wie die Chorverglasung der Rothenburger Jakobskirche aus der Mitte bzw. vom Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts, die von Hans Holbein d.A. entworfene Farbverglasung des Mortuariums des Eichstatter Domes sowie zahlreiche durerzeitliche Farbverglasungen in Ansbach, Nurnberg und Schwabach und anderswo. Grosseren Raum beansprucht auch die Farbverglasung aus dem Kreuzgang des ehemaligen Nurnberger Karmeliterklosters, die teilweise auf Entwurfe von Hans Baldung Grien zuruckgeht. Fur den im 16. bzw. 17. Jahrhundert nach Grossgrundlach, Henfenfeld und Wohrd abgewanderten Scheibenbestand wird erstmals eine Rekonstruktion vorgelegt. Fur die kunstlerisch hochbedeutende, bisher jedoch kaum beachtete bohmische Fensterstiftung im Chor der Hersbrucker Marienkirche aus der Zeit um 1370/80 weisen alle Indizien auf einen Prager Import, wahrend andere Farbverglasungen dieser Zeit in Markt Erlbach und Pollenfeld aus Nurnberg bzw. Eichstatt stammen. In einer Darstellung, die alle Aspekte der Uberlieferung, aber auch der kunstlerischen Voraussetzungen und Zusammenhange berucksichtigt, erschliesst der Band einen uberraschend vielfaltigen Denkmalerbestand. Nurnberger Glasmalereiwerkstatten stehen zwar im Zentrum, doch konnten bedeutende Arbeiten auch den Bischofsstadten Wurzburg, Bamberg, Eichstatt und Augsburg zugewiesen werden. Alle Scheiben werden in ihrer Erhaltung dokumentiert und im systematischen Tafelteil schwarz-weiss abgebildet. Daruber hinaus werden erstmals alle bedeutenderen Bestande zumindest in Gesamtaufnahmen auch farbig veranschaulicht. Ein Anhang erschliesst archivalisch uberlieferte Standorte; eine reich bebilderte kunstgeschichtliche Einleitung ordnet die Glasmalereien in ubergreifende Zusammenhange ein.
