Aufgrund des Klimawandels und der Ressourcenknappheit hat die Umwelt einen immer höher werdenden Stellenwert in unserer Gesellschaft bekommen. So geben ganze 77 Prozent der Befragten einer Studie an, dass ihnen ein persönlicher Beitrag zum Umweltschutz sehr wichtig ist. Aber vor allem in den Bereichen der Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft sowie in den Medien drangt sich der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit auf. Durch den steigenden globalen Wettbewerb sowie durch die Ressourcenknappheit, den Kostendruck und nicht zu vergessen dem stetig ansteigenden Zwang laufend Innovationen auf den Markt zu bringen, ist der Begriff der Nachhaltigkeit vor allem für Unternehmen zu einem zentralen Thema geworden. Ein Zitat des Gründungspräsidenten des Umweltbundesamtes, Heinrich Freiherr von Lersner, trifft es auf den Punkt. "In einer immer enger werdenden Welt mit immer knapperen Ressourcen wird nur die Volkswirtschaft sich mittelfristig behaupten können, die zeitig gelernt hat, so umweltgerecht wie möglich zu produzieren, zu vertreiben und zu konsumieren."
