Eine einheitliche Begriffsklärung ist derzeit nicht verfügbar. Es gibt verschiedene Ansätze, die versuchen, ein umfassendes Bild von CSR zu liefern. Der klassische Ansatz von Friedman sieht in der Profitmaximierung die einzige Verantwortung des Unternehmens, während die moderne Sichtweise Carrolls auch eine ethische und freiwillige Verantwortung einschließt. Bei den Alternativen handelt es sich um Abwandlungen des klassischen und modernen Modells. Es gibt keinen All-In-One-Ansatz. Geschichtlich hat CSR seinen Ursprung in den USA infolge von Initiativen der frühen Industrialisten. Der zunehmende Druck von Seiten der Öffentlichkeit, ausgelöst durch Umweltverschmutzung und soziale Missstände, bewegte die Unternehmen in den 70er Jahren vermehrt dazu, sozial verantwortungsvoll zu handeln. Heutzutage ergreift vor allem die Europäische Union auf europäischer Ebene zahlreiche Maßnahmen zur Förderung von CSR. In Österreich unternimmt die Bundesregierung gemeinsam mit den Sozialpartnern und anderen unparteiischen Organisationen im Bereich von CSR vielfältige Anstrengungen. Die Palette der Projekte ist groß und reicht von Gütesiegeln über Informationen im Internet bis hin zur Förderung älterer ArbeitnehmerInnen und Frauen.
