CHAPTER 1 Time for cost-cutting..., London, July 2013, memories of India, Indonesia, Krakow, Berlin and Sopot'
'The costs are just keep exploding, ' Ranveer said. 'They are way too high. The average wage of 6 000 pounds and 1 million pounds a month for the office space in the London city. It's ridiculous. We need to find a way out of it. The investors will be furious if they find out that a loss is expected and there will be no return on their investment! The competition got tougher! We are struggling for profits and have made couple of terrible investment decisions!' He was talking nervously to Adam, his corporate consultant.
Ranveer was a middle aged, charismatic British gentleman of the Pakistani origin, dressed up in the perfectly ironed black suit with a white bow tie and shining black shoes. Ranveer means a 'hero of the battle' in Hindi. In his career, he got up to the top management of the Panacea Hedge Fund, located in the London financial district. Panacea specialized in pooling the accredited investors, such as banks or corporations, and was trading on the property market worldwide.
There was one thing he hated in life, namely losing, that frustrating feeling when you put an effort into something and you're not successful, or somebody is better than you. He could still remember playing football in a dusty and sunny Islamabad with other school children when he was twelve years old. In the final match of the tournament he could have scored the winning goal in the last five minutes, but he missed the goal by five centimetres, leading to the draw, overtime, and his team losing the game. He felt shattered and depressed for another month, every evening overthinking the failure and what he could have done better. This time he's going to win. He will save the company and make investors happy.
