About the Book

A Cord in Time is not an historical play, but a play in history. Violence, especially war appears to be the end game of humanity, because man moves around the cycle of repetitive boredom. The question arises that how do we imagine the post-human tragic experience if caution is not taken? Each nation churns out huge budget to invent or procure sophisticated war machines of varied kinds to defend, or prepare for war. Actually, it was not the study of various wars or violent revolutions across the world that inspired this play alone, but a piqued spirit or a group of individuals that wanted it averted at any point in the time of turmoil, did. Do I need to say that the thematic pre-occupations in the play may have universal relevance, yet its local content within the Yoruba history is not lost? However, characters, settings and the story have no factual bearing to any particular history, or any political individual dead or alive.
This work is squarely and purely a product of imagination. In saying this, a work of fiction is a product of individual experience as steep deep in his/her society and in the process, he finds what defines his art, especially theatre, as a distinctive work of imagination, from what separates dramatic actions from the activities in the real world that give birth to it. And it is also different from other forms of performance and spectacle that are found in human activities in the larger world that arts imitate. Students of social history may agree with me that humanity is at verge of total annihilation in this neo-liberal/post-modernist era that is igniting digital thoughts, when technology dictates the pace of humanity. This is the time of social convulsion! We're in the age of artificial intelligence, but we cannot alienate humanity. If we do, it'll be to our peril! It has ever been a good idea for man to conquer nature, to subdue it; I think there is need to consider bio-centric vision of the world in which we live, by putting under strict control our violent nature- so as to retrieve humanity. This bio-centric ideology is essential, to lead us back to the root so as to manage the delirious drive towards the end time. What I've noticed in the inordinate crave for nuclear power acquisitions within its subjective dynamics of control is the autotelic dream of power mongers which is becoming innocuous reason for its global trends; yet it's deleterious to our collective beings. However, within these dynamics, A Cord in Time, suggests a prototypic statement, not that it will effect a better change as it were, but signal a good way to it- in this we find relationship between politics and drama. For, the greatest virtue of a good drama is for political good.
