Extracto del prólogo - Los relatos de este libro, que mi madre ha decidido publicar póstumamente, los escribió María Luisa en una época clave de su vida, entre 1965 y 1967. Al leerlos, conozco por primera vez la voz literaria de María Luisa, reencuentro a mi abuela en el mundo de las palabras. Los temas que surgen en esta recopilación están marcados por los acontecimientos que vivió María Luisa en esos años de transición: la inmigración a Estados Unidos, que aparentemente constituyó también un último intento desesperado de salvar su matrimonio con mi abuelo Enrique Lafourcade, escritor. En ellos, deconstruye el matrimonio clásico, exponiendo relaciones plagadas por el aburrimiento de la rutina y la infidelidad, e ilustra también la desilusión del sueño americano y el desengaño que sufren los que deciden volver a Chile y se encuentran con un mundo que ya no se asemeja a la patria imaginada. Curiosamente, aunque María Luisa opta por narrar tanto del punto de vista femenino como masculino, son las mujeres de sus relatos que logran salir de las rupturas con nuevas fuerzas, empoderadas por la independencia económica y la libertad de los amores extramatrimoniales, mientras que los hombres semblan incapaces de actuar, inseguros en su rol, cobardes al punto de esconderse en el retrete por evitar hablar con su esposa, o semblar estar dormidos por no saludar a una examante en un autobús. Visto dentro del contexto de los años sesenta, reflejan el cambio de rol de la mujer y del hombre en una sociedad en la cual las mujeres se incorporaban cada vez más en el mercado laboral y toman el poder sobre sus cuerpos: tener hijos se convierte en una decisión, y las relaciones puramente sexuales ya no resultan en una gran desventaja social para la mujer. Mi abuela María Luisa fue una pionera de esta revolución: Nacida en 1920, estudió Leyes y luego Bellas Artes, trabajó y viajó de forma independiente a una muy temprana edad en una época en la que aquello era extremadamente inusual para las mujeres. Trabajó en lo que amaba, con éxito, y tuvo una vida amorosa que no se dejó frenar por la vejez. Seguramente tuvo que sobreponerse a muchas críticas y falta de comprensión.Sin embargo, la voz narrativa de sus relatos se distingue por una ligereza, un sutil humor que niega el dramatismo, incluso en los momentos de crisis. Resalta el contraste entre lo banal-cotidiano -la receta para los corazones que describe detalladamente- y el desencadenamiento de cambios que producen rupturas profundas -la llamada del marido que ha decidido abandonar a su familia-. Parecen ser los impulsos más básicos y naturales que protegen a los personajes frente a las situaciones de crisis, un instinto de sobrevivencia que les permite continuar: el hambre de los niños que devoran la cena del papá que no volverán a ver, la mujer que abandona a su marido por un camionero, eligiendo ceder al deseo sexual sin pensar en qué vendrá después. En la vida, hay que tomar riesgos. Este fue uno de los últimos y únicos consejos que me dio María Luisa, cuando ya se acercaba a los noventa y vivía sobre todo en el pasado, en los recuerdos de aventuras que relataba con ojos brillantes, en los que se mezclaban realidad y fantasía.
