Stadium an, wodurch die idee eines eigentlichen 'l'hurmes ziemlich verschwinden wiirde. Ilerodot nennt jeden Absatz einen Thurm und auch dem Diodor zufolge war die H�he jenes Baues ausserordentlich gross. Weiter erz�hlt iierodot, wie Semiramis und Nilokris die Mauern und Heiligthilmer versch�neflw. Er spricht auch von bedeu tenden Canal und Wasserbauten, was von einer grossen technischen Fertigkeit der Babylonier Zengutss ablegt. Der Nitokris sc'hreibt er den Bau der Br�cke �ber den Euphrat zu, deren Pfeiler aus grossen mit Eisen und Blei verbundenen Quadern be standen. Diese Br�cke hatte eine h�lzerne Decke, welche abgenommen werden konnte und verband die �stliche mit der westlichen (altem) Anlage der Stadt. Nach Diodar war diese Br�cke f�nf Stadien lang und 30 Fuss breit. Nach Straho hatte der Fluss 'nur eine Breite von einem Stadium; die Pfeiler waren i2 Fuss von einander entfernt, vom scharf, hinten abgerundet; die Bedeckung bestand aus Zedern und Cypresseu, quer�ber aus Palmb�nmen. Nach demselben Autor hatte die Stadt zwei Burgen; die gr�ssere auf der Westseite (den Baaltempel und den grossen Palast der Semiramis umfassend) hatte eine dreifache Ringmauer, wovon die �ussere, hoch und kostbar, aus gebrannten Zlegcln errichtet, 60 Stadien Umfang hatte die zweite Mauer war rund hatte 40 Stad. Umfang und war aus ungebrannten Ziegeln erbaut, mit be malteu Beliefs; die dritte, von 20 Sind. Umfang, war reich mit Ornamenten, auch mit bemalten Beliefs geschm�ckt, welche die Jagden der Semlramis und des Nlnns vorsiellten; drei Pforten von Erz die mittels Maschinen ge�llhet wurden f�hrten in das innere. Die weitheriihmten h�ngenden G�rten auf der Ostseite der Stadt, waren von Nebukadnezar terrassenf�rmig angelegt "50 Ellen hoch 400 Quadratfuss gross, gest�tzt von 22 F. Dicken 10 F. Von einander entfernten Mauern (nach Curtius Rufus 20 F. Dick und ii F. Von einander entfernt). Die Zwischenr�ume waren mit 16 Fuss langen und Fuss starken Steinen bedeckt; dar�ber war eine Lage Schilf und EM pech dann eine Doppellage von Ziegeln, mit Kalk verbunden; dann Bielplatten und darauf Erde so hoch dass die st�rksten Palmen darin wurzeln konnten. Die R�ume unter den G�rten waren zu Prachtgem�chcrn eingerichtet. Auf der obersten'l'errasse befand sich ein Wamrbeh�lter, der aus dem Plusse durch Maschinen versorgt wurde. Im �stlichen Theile der Stadt befanden sich ferner die Pal�ste Nebukadnezars und seines Vaters, unter welchen chald: iischeu R�ntgen dieser Stadttheil zuerst seine Ausdehnung und Vemh�nerung erhielt. Babylon sank durch die Zerst�rungen der Perser, namentlich des Darius und Xerxes, und durch die Gr�ndung andrer Gross st�dte in der N�he, vorz�glich von Selcuklu und lite5lphon wie Simba und Piinius ausdr�cklich sagen. Historisch bleibt zu bemerken dass Alexander d. Gr. Zu Baby lon im Palast der Semiramis erkrankte und im Palast des Nebukadnezar starb. Die babylonischen Tr�mmerhaufen nehmen jetzt, mehr oder minder kenntlich, so weit sie durch Nicholnr, Rich [im J. Hill] und Robert her-porter [isis] erforscht sind (von den neuesten Forschungen durch Major ilawlinson grossbritann�chcn Ge neralconmi in Bagdad ist noch nichts pubilclrt), eine Fl�che mu etwa 3 geogr. Mei. Len in der L�nge und 2 in der Breite ein; besonders zeichnen sich drei H�gel auf der �stlichen und einer auf der westlichen Seite des Euphrat aus, letzterer in gr�ssicl' Entfernung vom Flusse. Diese Ruinenhiigel f�hren heute die Namen Makalllhe (oder Modsjallbe, d. H. Ruine), eliiassr (d.h. Palast), Amram und Birs Nimrod. Ma kallibe besteht aus ungebrannten Ziegeln ist 542 F. Lang, 230 F. Breit und NO Fuss hoch.
