Ruth Guimarães nasceu em 13 de Junho de 1920, em Cachoeira Paulista (SP).Recolheu estas histórias como quem garimpava ouro, no tempo em que ouro havia. Foi menina arteira, e convivia com as famílias dos peões e colonos da fazenda que o pai administrava, no sul de Minas Gerais. Preferiu sempre a companhia dos mais pobres, dos desvalidos, dos esquecidos. Participou de sua miséria e de seus mistérios. Deles ouviu, com toda a atenção do mundo, os relatos de princesas e príncipes, das espertezas dos caboclos, das andanças de São Pedro pelo mundo, e das aventuras dos animais, do tempo em que os animais falavam. Depois, regalou-se com as histórias contadas pela avó, ao pé da fogueira, nas noites límpidas de Cachoeira Paulista, no estado de São Paulo. A avó traduzia, para a neta menina, as tradições dos índios e dos negros. E Ruth ouviu, muito direitinho.Bem jovem, decidiu recontar essas histórias, segura de que tinha em mãos o tesouro da tradição oral do povo que ela amava. Reuniu num volume os recontos todos de assombração, de duendes e pequenos demônios como o saci, a mula sem cabeça e o lobisomem, e foi procurar o grande mestre Mário de Andrade. Nessa época já era estudante do curso de Letras Clássicas da USP, em São Paulo. Mário de Andrade a recebeu, elogiou, corrigiu e orientou. Mas não chegou a ver o livro pronto, porque morreu em 1948. Ruth preferiu dedicar-se mais às correções sugeridas e lançou, antes, o seu romance "Água Funda", uma doce história de amor. O livro fez sucesso instantâneo, e chamou a atenção de Antonio Candido, Nelson Werneck Sodré e Guimarães Rosa, entre outros escritores e críticos que escreveram sobre ele. Em 1950, quando então lançou o livro "Filhos do Medo", ampla pesquisa folclórica sobre o diabo e todas as manifestações demoníacas no imaginário do homem do Vale do Paraíba, a publicação lhe valeu um verbete na "Enciclópédie Française de la Pléiade", publicada pela Editora Gallimard, sendo Ruth Guimarães a única escritora latino-americana a receber esta distinção.Foram os primeiros de mais de 50 livros, de contos, pesquisas folclóricas, traduções do francês e do latim, e peças de teatro. Foi professora de língua portuguesa durante 35 anos em colégios estaduais. E ainda conseguiu tempo de fazer o curso de Dramaturgia e Crítica Alfredo Mesquita. De produzir reportagens para a Revista Quatro Rodas e Revista do Globo. E escrever, por anos e anos, crônicas nos jornais Folha de S. Paulo e Vale Paraibano. E de integrar o Conselho Estadual de Cultura, ao lado de Inezita Barroso. E de promover exposições de manifestações folclóricas.Em 2008 tornou-se a primeira escritora negra a integrar a Academia Paulista de Letras, tornando-se a imortal da cadeira número 22. Conviveu com escritores da maior importância no Brasil e no mundo, e que dedicaram a ela amizade e admiração: Lygia Fagundes Telles, Antonio Candido, Jorge Amado, Maurício de Sousa, Tatiana Belinky, Osman Lins, Marcos Rey e muitos outros.Ruth faleceu em 21 de Maio de 2014, mas continua viva nas histórias que encantam as imaginações.
