About the Book

English: This book offers you the opportunity to read in a simplified version two short stories by Guy de Maupassant - La Parure (The Necklace) and Mon oncle Jules (My Uncle Jules) - and two short stories by Alphonse Daudet - La Dernière classe (The Last Class) and la Chèvre de Monsieur Seguin (Mr. Seguin's Goat). Each adapted short story by Maupassant contains about 600 unique words, and each adapted short story by Daudet contains about 900 unique words. The literary verb tenses have been changed to conversational tenses to facilitate the reading. This book can be used in second or third year high school French classes or on the university intermediate level. Reading this work is an excellent means of growing your French vocabulary by reading stories that pique the curiosity of the reader.
About the Author: You can read about Guy de Maupassant and Alphonse Daudet on pages 3 and 22 of the book. Robert Loach has been a French teacher for over 40 years - 11 years teaching high school French and German and over 30 years teaching French at Bob Jones University. During his time as a high school teacher, he completed an M.A. in French Language and Literature at Eastern Michigan University where he also acquired Michigan Continuing Certification to teach secondary French and German. Using his experience of teaching French on two different levels, he has adapted these four short stories so that they can be used in either a high school or college classroom. While retaining, as much as possible, the authors' style in the original works, Loach simplified the vocabulary and the grammar to make the works more accessible to students learning French as a second language. One of the main grammatical adaptations was changing the literary past tenses to conversational tenses. At the back of the book there are questions about the reading to guide students as they seek to understand what they are reading, as well as to help in class discussion.
